I'd be satisfied with something with similar characteristics as my seemingly broken Billion 8800NL.
And, truth be told, I prefer "new", unless sure of the seller.

Then I'd look for a VMG8324-B10A - "new" should be available for a lot less than £75 on eBay.

Just found Kitz's 2014 review and that was good https://kitz.co.uk/routers/zyxel_VMG8324-B10A_review.htm, bar for the problem of setting up VDSL with Quickstart. A good guide was given, but since then has the firmware been upgraded to avoid that necessity; anyone know?

Afraid I've not used Quickstart on my VMG8924, and it's on the line right now so I can't really experiment.
Personally I wouldn't worry about that as they are easy enough to set-up as per Kitz's guide.

Well, that's life for me! There seems to be a dearth of cheap, new condition vmg8324 routers on Ebay, rather more 8924s.

Voip is another matter; whether the befits would ever outweigh the hassle for us two oldies, whose calls around 25/month are contained in my Plusnet Anytime call plan. I know  that I can leave that service alone, but are there similar routers without Voip?

If an 8924 is available at a price you're happy with then get one of those.
They're just an 8324 with a 5GHz wireless module added, everything else is identical.

It's me, but I cannot rid myself of uncertainty over Ebay, even though my offspring have used it, but for run of mill items not tec. How do the sellers get their brand new boxed routers to offer? :-\

I'll mull on, but what could be available new under the £100 mark with Broadcom chipset to go with Huwaei cabinet and DSLstats on my crosstalk clobbered line? How inferior is the 8800NL r2 to the r1?

I admit that you do take a bit of a chance with tech on eBay, but if something is not as the seller described it eBay will nearly always favour on the buyers side and refund your money.
I've had a lot of very good buys from there.

I know it fails the under £100 requirement, but what about the Billion 8900X R3?  (just over £140 on Amazon, 1 left in stock...)

It's basically the same as my 8900AX-2400 but without the wi-fi, and the 8900AX is rock-solid - current uptime is 208 days (and that was only because I powered it off to tidy up cables) and it never, ever loses sync even on my long, crappy error-prone line.  I've tried a Zyxel 8924 and it was no more (or less) reliable, but did have some annoying DNS-related "features" that work fine on the Billion.

Just spotted a like new "Billion BiPAC 7800DXL Triple WAN Dual Band Wireless N Gigabit ADSL2+/Fibre 3G/4G LTE Broadband Router with USB Port" Amazon Warehouse deal at less than £75. I'm tempted.

I'm confused! What type of fibre is it in the description I posted?

Broadband Buyer describes it
Code: [Select]
Billion BiPAC 7800DXL Triple-WAN Simultaneous Dual-Band WiFi ADSL2+/FTTC Router w/ 3G/4G LTE Support (600Mbps N)
7800DXL

The 7800DXL supports Fibre in the sense it has an Ethernet WAN port for you to connect a Fibre modem.

You were right the first time - it is ADSL only. As ejs has pointed out FTTC needs a separate modem which plugs in to the WAN port.
