Can I set target db lower than 6db?
« on: September 30, 2015, 12:44:57 PM »

I have a Hg612 or Eci/r.  Can these or any other modem allow you to set a target db of lower than 6db?  I am stuck on an Eci cab so no gimp and have been affected by crosstalk (30% less).  Going off stats I think I should be able to hold on to 3db perhaps even lower.  Thanks

You can try but DLM won't like it. I think it's forbidden in one of the BT SINs.

no, neither modem allows it and the DLM will just ignore it if you find one that does allow it. FTTC is a fixed 6db target, only openreach can change it.

It might not be a good idea in the sense that, if you could do successfully reduce the target SNR margin, then you might find that speed testers' results for IP throughput might go downhill. Based on a couple of recent bad experiences where something like this has (accidentally) happened to me.

Only certain devices have the ability to change the target SNRM. The HG612 for example won't allow it. However, the ASUS DSL-AC68U can (though it's generally poor on stability unless you're lucky enough to have G.INP enabled on your line).

The dsl_cpe_pipe command to try and adjust the target downstream noise margin is:

locs 0 x

where x is a value from -50 to 50 corresponding to -5.0 dB to 5.0 dB e.g.

locs 0 20

would increase the target SNRM by 2 dB

The comment in src/include/drv_dsl_cpe_api.h above DSL_OPT_NOISE_MARGIN_DELTA_DS says
Quote
If this parameter will be changed from it's default value it is
strictly recommended to use ONLY positive values. Negative values
are likely to result in link instabilities.

I don't know if it works on VDSL2, I doubt it would.

Edit: That command would be for the ECI modem or other Lantiq chipset based hardware. I somehow thought ktz392837 was getting their stats from the ECI modem, but of course the Openreach HG612 is much easier to unlock.

My upstream SNR has hovered around 4.3dB for several weeks and DLM hasn't intervened. ES is < 3

I am starting to wonder if something has happened to the snr... or if I have just been lucky...

I posted here : http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,15998.0/topicseen.html in August noting that I had a bump in speed when a neighbor went on holiday for a week with it dropping back to "normal" when he came back.

I rebooted the modem when he was away and "gained" new speed

When he came back the snr plummeted as expected!
At that point I was running well below the snr of 6.
I was expecting at the next modem reset to go back to an snr of 6 and lose the extra speed.

I did get a subsequent loss of connection and resync on 15/9 but to my surprise, I'm still at a low snr 4.9 / 3.8 and the speed has stayed so far....

Strange but nice!

Does anyone else find that even though the target is 6.0db it is always cautiuous - the best I have seen is 6.3db on my hg612/ecicab?  I do hope a relaxation of the rules are on the cards at bt.
