Netgear 802N rated modem router with Aruba B/G rated RAP
« on: October 26, 2010, 05:34:21 PM »

This question is admittedly vague on detail, for which I apologise.

My daughter and her husband both work for different concerns and communicate with their HQs and clients from home. The modem router was a Netgear 834Gv3 and it worked well with the Aruba RAP that one needs to use for secure wireless communication with HQ.

The Netgear died and was replaced by an N as opposed to a G rated one, but since then they have had many instances where the Netgear locks up and has to be rebooted.

Is it possible that using products  of different ratings could raise conflicts of any type?

I thought I had, but I guess I didn't actually post it.

What model of router is the N version?

Not sure: I'll ask when I can.

But from what was said he got it from the High Street ;) for about £60- £70 in a sale.

The reason I asked is that there is one Netgear 'N' router - DGN3500 - which has become infamous for repeatedly dropping the connection and failing to reconnect automatically. I just wondered if this could be the model in question.

Left msg to call back. Does the price I mentioned point to 3500N being the most likely?

If your guess is inspired, what would be other options? Man is Netgear biased.

Daughter tells me it's a 1000. Perhaps she means DGN1000?

That's quite likely, the DGN1000 is the replacement for DG834G. It uses the same Infineon chipset as the DGN3500, so I would have my suspicions about it, but I've got no evidence to suggest that there's anything wrong with it.

In the meanwhile I got my googles on. Seems quite a few have trouble with it and "bin" often features in replies.

May I ask what you would recommend for good signal and stability. They have a mid 20s house 5 beds.

Hi Renluop,

Bearing in mind I'm eternally doing battle in the sticks with diabolical and varying long lines, I would always try a 2Wire 2700HGV that I'm now reasonably well acquainted with - even with it's rather strange set-up procedures.

The latest BT service I've managed to correct was bumping along with an IP profile of 250 Kbps and a throughput of 163 Kbps. With the 2Wire we have now achieved an IP profile of 1000Kbps (just) and a throughput in the middle 900s

Kind regards,
Walter

Hi Walter(:

Connection wise they're very lucky, getting ADSL Max at top whack.

Netgear have issued a firmware update for the DGN1000 and from the date (US style )it's possible the problem article has the old old. Can some one look at its detail
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/17109/kw/DGN1000%20Firmware%20Version/r_id/100109/sno/1 and advise if it would seem to cover my relatives'  troubles; please?

I'm not very tech savvy :baby:

There's really no way of telling. But as it's primarily a bugfix it would almost certainly be worth updating.

Thx :). I'll tell them, but I think they are minded to look for something else. They both need reliability for their jobs.

I have seen suggestions that sometimes the positioning of a router can make a difference, and their house is mid 20s 3 bed recently extended to 5, lge, diner, util room, cons'y.. Could the positioning be a source of the trouble, though as the old Netgear834G worked, I am inclined to discount that?

Are there other better current Netgear models out there without the DGN history? Or what of the other makes has a reputation for trouble free use and sticking to its connection?
