wireless conection
« on: November 04, 2010, 08:29:54 AM »

I have an ASUS laptop and a DGN2000 router, the built in wireless adapter is  not draft n but the router is. My question is would things improve if i had a Netgear draft n dongle.

Hi Gannite,

Unless you're working at the limits of the wireless range, I don't think you would observe any benefit as far as broadband speeds are concerned as the very best broadband speed you're likely to have might be as high as 20 Mbps and the wireless link has a capability of about double that speed.

Kind regards,
Walter

Whilst you haven't indicated what sort of problems you want to address, it's worth pointing out that ANY laptop built-in wireless adapter will almost always work much better than ANY plug-in USB device.

The same applies to desktops, where internal PCI or PCI-e cards are definitely preferred, especially with separate aerials on a "pigtail" lead.

Thanks i just wondered if the fact that one was n and the other not mattered, but from your reply it seems not.

Well it depends what you want to do, which you still haven't said...........
If, for example, you were transferring large files between a wireless laptop and a wired server on the same network, especially one connected to the wireless access point by a gigabit LAN then you might see faster throughput.
But it would depend which "N" version (there are many options) was actually active and how much external interference and other useage.

However the DGN2000 has only 2.4GHz "N", ADSL2+ (max 24mbps) and 100mbps LAN, so you can probably work it out yourself. ;)
