Tescos are finally defeated!
« on: September 09, 2008, 09:41:48 AM »

This is a saga that has been ongoing for about 3 years... Tescos trying to build a supermarket in the quaint seaside town of Sheringham.

The item begs the question, are there no poor, low income, families in Sheringham?
It is OK having independant traders for quality and personal service but it comes at a price.
There are still people in this country who struggle to put food on the table, more so when the winter energy bills start arriving.

I ask because the small town near where I live has lots on 'independant traders' and also about ten charity shops. There is also a Co-op, a Booths supermarket (just having a bigger one built) and a medium sized Somerfields (in the process of being taken over by the Co-op).

The nearest Hypermarkets are about 10 miles away in Preston, Lancaster and Blackpool, all pretty much on a bus route from here, but not much use without a car. Try getting on a bus with 6 or 7 full carriers.

We shop in town on a weekly basis using the local butchers and local farm shop as well as the supermarkets for their BOGOFs and 3-4-2 offers,  but for most bulk household shopping we make a trip to Asda or Morrissons once every two or three weeks.

The people in the picture celebrating with the champers appear to be the affluent section of the local comunity, and apart from one quote at the end of the report, all the quotes were from people who will benefit from the application being turned down.

The report is very biased and glories in the little man beating the giant bad guy. It is alright having the bad guys build out of town IF people have transport to get there and save money on a 'big' shopping spree but don't class having them built on a bus route as being any use at all.

Perhaps Tesco may have been better trying to get a Tesco Express in the town:

Well there's the rub Dave... families have got quite a few miles to drive (along crappy Norfolk roads) for their nearest supermarket... at a guess either Cromer or Fakenham.

I agree with what you are saying Dave about low income families.I would like to be able to buy Organic and buy from farm farmshops, independant retailers etc,but unfortunately I do not have the income of Jamie Oliver or Hugh. F. Whittingstall.I like nothing better than buying top quality produce taking it home and cooking something which has taste and flavour, something that is sadly lacking in supermarket produce this day and age.All the Supermarkets are bothered about is what food looks like/what shape it is,not what it tastes like.
Take Morrisons for instance, their new 'Fresh is best' campaign. It might be fresh but its tasteless.
I think independant specialist food retailers have a place on the high street, but we also need the prices of big supermarkets.South Yorkshire is one of those places where very few people would pay the extra cost of specialist retailers and rely on the big supermarkets to feed their families.
The bottom line is we need big supermarkets, but there has to be limits on how many we allow.

It sems to me that the most important thing here is that local wishes have been properly taken into consideration.

Quote
"It shows Tesco cannot bulldoze the rights and wishes of local communities."

Sadly, so often that's exactly what Tesco can do, and personally I applaud the fact that they lost in this case.

The bottom line is we need big supermarkets, but there has to be limits on how many we allow.

According to the article Tesco have 1252 stores BUT it does not say if that is including the small Express stores in the total. So,a very ill-informed report.
Another fact that no one seems to have been informed about is how near the town centre would it have been?

Regarding UncB's comment about limits on how many, the numbers should be about equal for each of the big players in any area so that competition is there. If one of the big guys has a supermarket within easy reach of Sheringham and there is no competition from the others then there should be another one at least to stir up sales.

If the independant traders are offering the BEST they can and customers are willing to pay for it then they would not fear the competition.

According to the Anglia News report last night, it would have been about 500 yards from Sheringham's main shopping street.

That would have been brilliant, think how much that would have reduced traffic. No need even for a bus service!.

This am have been to Sheringham on a fault, hadly worked there, tried to find the exchange for the first time.  ???

think i needed a ball of wool when i got inside, odd lay out ?

Found it in the end  ???.
and the job there  ??? ??? ??? not good, but i pity the poor chaps who'll get the dig to sort it

went in a caravan park, a lot of their plots where closed due to the rain, sludgy

Then i found the internal wiring from the nte  :o :o :o :o

I think I've found the problem, "What pilchard did this C**p ?" If only I could post a photo

Such a pretty place, so is north runton nearby.

Then I got Cromer, an exchange fault which took ages and ages to sort. Then got a call  from my manager, "You know that damage report we got, can YOU do it" at least it's overtime..... turns out to be a load of electrical stuff thats fallen on our telecoms cableing. Leads to the problem of every time the end user uses her phone the lights in her house change brightness. A new form of REIN  ???
This had been put through to the el board to sort in july 2006, prompt work, i still can't touch our stuff due to regs with 3 loads of "stuff" hanging on our cables. never mind i can't go within 450mm of the stuff It's bad enough a couple of years ago getting a nasty "nip" on the exchange and finding a nice big blister and long bruse on the thumb. Will I go any where near leectrical stuff now,

You work for BT Ezzer?

I did 32 years then took the money and ran. Mostly exchange maintenance on strowger, then TXE.
Finished my time as a manager in Internet Operations after spending some time in the redeployment pool.

Don't miss it one bit.

I believe he does Dave...

Don`t forget....H&S is king except when you have Numpty managers who don`t know anything about the jobs & have Budgets to meet. I have similar issues with my firm, but have Numpty Engineers to add to the fun.... :)
