Can I use my own ONU?
« on: November 06, 2025, 01:39:32 PM »

I’m evaluating the possibility of moving to FTTP and, in the meantime, I’d like to understand whether I can purchase/use my own ONU.

I’ve started reading about how FTTP works, and it seems some users were able to replace the Openreach ONU, while others weren’t.

I’m quite new to FTTP, so any advice is more than welcome!

You certainly won't be able to on the Openreach network, can't comment about Alt Nets.

Remember that FTTP is entirely different to a copper service in that the ONU receives all the channels of the PON (up to 30) and just extracts the relevant channel. There are obvious security implications with using your own ONU.

I worked for an AltNet. There is no way I would have supported you using your own ONU. They require registering with the network, and we couldn't be supporting one offs. I doubt you will find any ISP that will let you supply your own.

Now, if you replace what is supplied with something else and you can mimick what is registered - it works - but its up to you. I do this with my nexfibre based VMO2 internet connection but I would not expect them to support me if I run into an issue. I'd have to use their hub5x and THEN see if I still had a problem and only then can I call for support.

I'm puzzled as to why you'd want to use your own ONU. What could you gain over using the one the ISP supplies (and supports if you have an issue)?

Yes you can, there are many videos on the Evil Youtube and other web logs.
However you need to do it retrograde and jump through a number of hoops like a gymnast!
As to why?
Some do it for upgrades others to reduce the clutter.
As for myself it is above my current skill set and requirement.
So best of luck!

In most cases there is not much to be gained from using your own.

However, if you are a VM customer, the Hub5x is frankly terrible, no modem mode. I would need modem mode in order to use the rest of my equipment. So, by using my own ONT/U, I can run whatever I like. Does require some skill admittedly, and this happens to be my job so trivial for me :)

Thank you all for the useful info, it's clear I don't need to bother replacing that

Usually to replace VM' s Hub5x gateway with a single purpose ONT or to change form factor from a separate unit to an SFP+ module :)
