N305 - OPNsense crash on upgrade to 25.7 - RESOLVED
« on: July 25, 2025, 05:11:30 PM »

I appreciate I am a sample of 1, but I did the OPNsense update 25.1 to 25.7 yesterday on my N305 router and after a mighty crash, reset and brief recovery within 4 hours my router box completely crapped itself overnight (around 0200 hrs) - the full freeze at 100% CPU and on reboot not recoverable.

My router has been utterly reliable since I got it about a year ago, so it might be a coincidence - but my current view is that 25.7 is to blame.

I just done a full reinstall of 25.1 and uploaded my last config backup and its running fine so far (CPU @ 37C), just what I wanted to be doing on a nice sunny day  ;D

I'm going to sleep on whether to try the update again ....  :-\

If you try it again, try to record as much metrics as possible, so if it happens again you might have an idea of what the cause is?

I tried again, it ran fine on 25.1 overnight and this attempt it crashed immediately during the update process to 25.1.12 whilst it was updating openssl. I submitted crash reports but the logs are so verbose I am just not able to identify a cause.

I decided to take different approach and downloaded the 25.7 img and installed that this morning, installed fine but did then 2 crash and reboots in the first hour.

The system was however stable enough for me to find 3 plugins in error, I was able to resolve these by using 'Reset All Conflicts' in the Audit tools and followed by a reboot things seems to have improved i.e. no crashes for the last 2 hours

I did look at firmware updates for my board, but the CWWK website put me off, best description of their support website is by another user I came across who called it "a dumpster fire", I got a BIOS image but I think its very much a last resort as I have read a few bad reports about BIOS updates going wrong.

So far so good

Just in case any watching this thread, I'm going to stay at 2.5.1 and wait for 2.5.7.1 release (due in a couple of weeks) before upgrading as I have not resolved the instability and crashing issue I have. When the new patch arrives I am going to try a reinstall using ZFS file system option instead of UFS but I think it is also unlikely to be my the issue,  a lot discussion on the OPNSense forums suggesting there is some kind of issue with a plugin for Intel "Intel CPU microcode updates" but again I don't think this is my issue.

I do like VM's for this, I could just snapshot it and roll back to the old one if it was bad...

I do also understand why VM's for routers are bad.

Good point, tbh I did mess about with running things in a virtual machine for a while but one good thing about OPNsense is that as long as you back up your configuration a full install is very short process (less than 10 minutes once you have done it a few times) and the installer includes the option to run your config in memory / off a USB stick as a test for as long as you like.

The VM idea is cool as you can run other things on the hardware, but in the end I kind of feel like you want your main router undisturbed so I felt like I shouldn't really be multi-tasking, playing sperlunky or whatever on the family router  ;D

Resolved the stability issue.

In case anyone googles this or has a similar issue my router has run without issue on 2.5.7 for 4 days and I just updated it to 2.5.7.1 without issue.  This is long enough to suggest the issue is resolved.

I resolved the stability issue by removing the active traffic graph from the Dashboard / GUI and this seems to have fixed the issue - I believe it was crashing the GUI, other users reported issues with the graphs in this thread.

The traffic graph I am talking about looks like the one attached.

If OPNsense installs OK on your device but the GUI crashes or OPN instability begins with GUI errors then if you are able, disable the active graphs and reboot / reinstall to see if things improve.

Good you found it, I do still run opnsense on one device and I feel the UI overhaul overall is a regression.
