n100 topton cooling
« on: June 29, 2025, 04:26:12 PM »

Hi,
I purchased a Topton fanless N100 a few months back. These things get really hot. Has anyone got any cooling solutions to help? It's such a small box.

I've got a Minix z100-0db and it's fanless too and man it gets hot too. But I've been assured it's okay like this. I've done some heavy video encoding and the CPU sits at 100% for a long time and it hasn't missed a beat. I did buy a USB fan though - never used it, but is one like this:

I heard of people having issues with these overheating but not had the problem myself. I think its because I have it mounted to the wall so the case/heatsink fins are vertical for optimal convection cooling. (I did have some random reboots but they seemed to go away when I switched from the included M.2 to a known good SATA SSD)

Mine is even the old regular version with shorter fins.

If on pfSense, don't forget to enable Speed Shift in System, Advanced, Miscellaneous, set Core Control to Core Level Control and set Power Preference to somewhere around the middle.
On Advanced, Networking I also have Use if_pppoe kernel module for PPPoE client enabled.

My CPU temp has always been ok, but I do air cool it for the NVME which pretty much without active cooling is pegged at throttle temperature, and also for RAM, as the RAM has no temp sensor so to be on safe side.
These are two tiny fans, and I attached an (tunable) attenuator so they spin very slowly, fans dont need to spin very fast, the vast majority on the market spin faster than needed.

I suspect my hdmi might be damaged (or the cable is) as when I rebooted pfSense earlier today to test it boots ok ready for 2.8.0 upgrade the EFI negotiation failed on boot.  Meaning no console.  I managed to get it working with an override to disable EFI video negotiation.
