What Washing Machine ?.
« on: June 28, 2010, 12:53:53 AM »

With our 16 year old Zanussi washing machine putting grease on the washing (main drum bearing going ) it's time we got another one, this being the first problem we have had with it, so it's not done too bad.

What do you recommend ?.
Any on line bargains ?.

I would recommend Zanussi, I had one for about 20yrs prior to my new machine which is a Zanussi. Had this one for about 10yrs with no problems whatsoever. Of course Zanussi is also part of another company now, not sure which.
Recommending an appliance like this is one of personal preference really.

Unless there has been a recent change Zanussi is part of the Electrolux Group for many years.

We had a top-end Zanussi machine for many years which finally gave up a few years back.
Then we had a Hotpoint which didn't last long (bearings - not cost-effective to repair once the warranty became parts only)
We settled on a low-end (not quite bottom) John Lewis own brand which had all the features we wanted/needed and is going well.

One thing we did find was that different brands have different "features" as standard, low-end or maybe only on top-end models, so you need to decide what's important or just pay too much.
e.g. we wanted separate rinse & spin programmes and a larger drum for washing duvets.

Of course if you can find one there's the Hotpoint Twin Tub with Electric Wringer.

The new LG 11Kg is a nice machine, but a bit on the pricey side.
£900.00

*****************
edit
Just been looking again and I see the original price of £900 has now come down to around £670.00.

Site for information purpose only as I have never used them.

Our ancient Zanussi packed up last year after giving years of excellent service.
We looked at a new Zanussi, but they don't build 'em liked they used'ta.

So we went for a Siemens. Had it about a year and are well-pleased.
It wasn't the cheapest option, but looked and felt solid and well-built.
It's certainly much calmer when it spins than the Zanussi was.

Here in Hertfordshire we use our local shop - Mains - which is a small chain
in the North London area. They usually match, or beat, online prices.

Cheers,
Peter

Our hoover was on it's last legs earlier this year (we've had two one lasted 16 years, the other about 14 I think).  This time my better half chose a bosch.  It is very quiet, doesn't bounce around the utility room, and seems to have good build quality.  About the same price as similar hotpoint models etc

Time will tell how long it last.

Thanks for all your reply's .

The mangle  re-minds me when I was a young lad helping my mother do the wash with dolly tub and mangle  ;D.

Going to have a look on line stores tonight and some shops tomorrow .

Edit   I'm unhappy about the removal of the hot water valve in modern washing machines, only cold supply input on lots now..Why..

>> Edit   I'm unhappy about the removal of the hot water valve in modern washing machines, only cold supply input on lots now..Why..

The main reason is that soap powders in this country will now work at much lower temperatures than what they used to. There are quite a few countries that actually wash on cold.

Another feature to look out for is the new Direct Drive system, which means no belts and no noise.

Yes but I want to fill with free solar heated water, not to have to pay for cold water being heated by a electric heater.
