UKOnline
« on: March 25, 2009, 04:57:50 PM »

Hi all,

When I put my phone number and postcode into most linecheckers including the one on the UKOnline website it says i can get ADSL max with download speeds up to 1.5mb.
I contacted UKO by email who replied asking me for my phone number and postcode so they could check if I could move on to their equipment(my exchange is LLU enabled for UKO)
I had a reply saying yes I could be put on their equipment and would get speeds of around..........5.1mb.This has left me a little confused to say the least.

Just had this reply from them after I queried their findings

Quote
I just checked your line in both of our systems and the main one that we use is comming back with 5.1mb the other is agreeing with you and saying 2mb, now this could be an issue with the line checker but what you could do so as to make sure you don't end up paying more than you have to is, you can sign up for the 2mb and once that is all done our system that shows the exchange information will be able to tell us how much your line can handle and if it is up at 5.1mb then you can upgrade your line so that you can get the faster speed.

Kind regards,

xxxxxxx (Ukonline Sales)

Hi UncleUB,

I suggest you put your details into Kitz's splendid checker if you havent already done so.

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/adslchecker.php

and then compare the road distance for your line using e.g. :-

http://www.uk.map24.com/

entering your postcode and that of your exchange as well as a way point if you happen to know where your green street cabinet is.

You can also check estimated speeds if you have your line stats available at:-

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php

and also at Andrew Ferguson's web site:-

http://www2.farina1.com/adsl/default.aspx

I hope that might give you enough answers to have a little more confidence.
Kitz might also explain how some of the checkers work.
I believe some BT ones use the line performance data to estimate the line distance rather than trying to interpolate from the ground distance.

Kind regards,
Walter

Hi Walter,

I have done the checks you have posted and they say 1.5mb.I know you can usually squeeze a bit more  out of a LLU connection but 5.1mb.!!!

My downstream attenution is 63.5
and at present my downstream snr is 5.2

Hi uncleUB,

I suggest they are another lot of "supernatural magicians" I mentioned before.
With such line stats I don't think you stand a snowflake's chance in hell of achieveing 5 mbps.
ADSL2+ etc will have no real effects with those line parameters.

However it might be interesting just to check the road (line) distance.

Kind regards,
Walter

Hi Walter,

I'm no broadband techie, but I think I know enough to totally agree with you.I think its a case of 'moon' and 'promising' just to get another sign up.

Hi
according to your attenuation  you might get between 1952 and 2016 Kbps synch speed depending on what system is available . This gives an IP profile of between 1500 and 1784 Kbps . see below
 http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php

regards Jeff

I think youre right lol.

The adsl technology is still the same, and even though UKO use adsl2+ on your line it isnt going to make much difference and your sync speed will be more or less the same as now.

The major advantage to you will be no BT IPprofile.

Hi all,

What I have noticed is if you sign up for their 'pro package',you can get 768kb upload. If I was on LLU would I get something like that,or does that also depend on my line length.
I also  noticed that they have a 20:1 contention rate for that package, instead of 33:1

Upstream is generally no problem, because it uses lower frequencies which are less attenuated than the downstream frequencies. I believe that with (some?) LLU providers you can choose a tradeoff between upstream and downstream to get the combination which suits you best.

I doubt if the lower contention ratio of a business package would make much difference to you.

Thanks Eric.  :)

I just thought having a faster upload speed would be better when I'm uploading photo's .

Yes, if you do a lot of that it might be worth considering a business package, or LLU if it's available.
