Zyxel VMG1312-B10A - unable to access GUI
« on: August 21, 2021, 07:18:03 PM »

In the early hours of this morning, there was a blip showing on the TBB monitor. I assumed it was just a resync or some maintenance work. I've since been unable to access the GUI of the Zyxel, so perhaps it randomly rebooted? DSLStats has also stopped recording. Everything else appears to be working fine though. I'm still getting the throughput that I was before. I'm fairly certain that I'd changed the IP address to access the GUI, to 192.168.1.254. But this doesn't appear to be working. Is there a way to find out what the IP address might be? I'll just restart it, if not.

Check the gateway address in the IP configuration on any device you are successfully using to access the internet - that will be the router's IP.

Ah, sorry, should add that I’m using the Zyxel in bridge mode. I’ve tried ipconfig in Windows and that shows the gateway as 192.168.1.1, which would be the pfsense router.

Does it show up in the ARP cache of your pfsense or DHCP server?

It’s not showing in the ARP table or DHCP leases.

Just wondering whether the 1312 has reset itself and you have two devices on 192.168.1.1.

I have a much simpler set-up with a modem connected to an Orbi router and have set the modem as 192.168.1.1 for the modem and assigned 192.168.1.2 to the router.

Is it worth resetting the pfsense IP address and see whether your 1312 pops back into life?

I’ll give that a go. If that doesn’t work, I’ll just reset the 1312 and set it back up. Would it be worth giving it a static IP?

I'm pretty certain I set my modem and routers of .1 & .2 respectively and then set DHCP to allocate addresses for other devices from .3 upwards.  Works for me.

Just tried setting the router to .2, to see if the modem works on .1 but, no change. I'll just reset it and set it up again.

Edit: Resetting the modem has worked. I've just left it on 192.168.1.1 and moved the router to .2. No idea why the 1312 would suddenly decide to kind of reset itself.

Had another resync today. Not quite sure why but since then, the downstream SNR has been slowly dropping away. Has anyone else experienced that with the 1312? Starting to wonder if the unit is beginning to fail. I do have a brand new one that was left with a relative, although not in use. Might swap it out and see.

Edit: Just after I posted, it’s resynced again. Back to a normal 6db.

I would try substituting the 12v PSU first either with a suitably rated, polarity matched plug unit or borrowed from the other 1312 you have available, not uncommon for these to fail/produce lower voltage under load.

Do try to limit the number of re-boots/re-synchs or you could well incur the wrath of DLM assuming that's not the case already!

If my old 1312-B10A keeps going to the end of this year I will be quite happy as it's always been the best performer by far on my FTTC line, plan to migrate to FTTP at end of current contract in December.

I’ll give that a go. I’m fully expecting DLM to intervene, be surprised if it didn’t. Interestingly, I have the Johnson firmware on it and it’s taking a few refreshes of the browser before any stats show. Sometimes the page only partially loads. Always used to be pretty much instant. Seems to be another quirk that has appeared.

Following in from what tiffy said about PSUs, I am using two of these 12V DC UPS units to power my old (ZyXEL) WAPs. I haven’t tried using one on a VMG 1312-B10A, might be worth thinking about as a reliable replacement unit with the huge added benefit of being a mini UPS.

I've switched to the new 1312 as well as replacing the PSU. See how it goes.

They look pretty good. I guess they could come in useful for relatively short periods of power outages.
