New contract and moving BT MK3 Socket upstairs.
« on: April 14, 2016, 10:06:31 PM »

Hi,

My BT Infinity 1 contract ends by end of June. I'd like to know if I cancel the contract on that date and sign for a new exactly the same will I be eligible for a free installation of another MK3 Socket upstairs? My actual MK3 Socket is downstairs in living room by the front door and window which forces me to use long 10M ethernet cable for my PC which is upstairs. I would like it to be moved upstairs to my room which is on the back garden side. Is it possible?

Thanks!

I very much doubt it.

And I would be very careful about using the "cancel" word. In fact I would advise against using it.

Well I will replace the word "cancel" with "extend the contract for indefinite period of time" but with new cheaper price which is £12.50 + £17.99 like I am a new customer. Thats what I mean :)

If you manage to get away with it, then good!  ;)

You will just have to pay Openreach a small charge for "change point of entry". I did, and very pleased with the results.

It may have increased since I had it done, which was well over ten years ago, but it is something like £120 for the first hour, if memory serves. Others will be able to tell you authoritatively.

Well, I guess I'll leave it as it is. What about if I purchase about 8-10M DSL cable?

Of course, it is not about the price, but the performance and line issues when using very long DSL cable. Is it recommended to use such long DSL cable? I don't want to risk stability of connection etc.

I would recommend keeping the DSL cable as short as possible and using long Ethernet cables instead. Using a separate small switch or a WAP, or a modem plus router two-box set-up will give you the flexibility you need.

The only way to tell how much difference a long DSL cable will make is to try it each way and keep a record of the stats to compare. You may see a small loss which may be acceptable, or you may see no decrease at all.

You mean loss of speed/sync or SnR? Can it also cause problems with ping/stability and disconnections? I am using long 10M ethernet cable right now but would like to have router near PC.

Using a long, but good quality twisted pair DSL cable should have about the same effect as increasing the length of telephone cabling to the master socket that you would have had if you'd moved the master socket upstairs. The Tandy DSL cable is of higher specification than the standard twisted pair telephone cabling, so it shouldn't be any worse than moving the socket.

I doubt very much it will cause problems with ping/stability and disconnections, unless your line is already borderline.
What are your current sync speeds?
