De-bricking Zyxel NWA-3560-n WAP
« on: April 01, 2016, 05:44:12 AM »

I've managed to brick my Zyxel NWA-3560-n by uploading a config into it. I've tried the usual poking the pin in the reset hole etc. Usually this works, but this time round it either is unresponsive or shows a login prompt and then goes quiet afterwards.

It's presumably something to do with precise timing of the duration of the pin in the hole or the amount of time it is without power.

Any tips?

I would try the following --
  • Power down the device and disconnect all leads.
  • Apply power to the device and leave it to "settle" for, say, five minutes.
  • Insert an appropriate probe into the hole to operate the reset switch. Keep the switch held for, say, thirty seconds.
  • Leave the device to "settle" for another five minutes.
  • Power down the device and disconnect the lead to the power supply.
  • Go and make a mug of tea.
  • Reconnect all leads and apply power to the device.
Depending upon the result of the last step, you may require the services of someone who knows the device at PCB level and is able to recover it via the JTAG interface. (Assuming there is one . . .)

I had a look at the contents of the firmware package that is available from the ZyXEL web-site. The textual files (notes and instructions) have been written in very fractured English -- so much so that I could not understand the information it was attempting to provide.  :(

However I persevered with another document and discovered (I believe it was an Appendix C) that there are comprehensive details for how to recover from a failed/aborted/interrupted firmware flashing session. Hopefully that will help you recover the device . . .  :-\

Step  8.
If 1 to 7 fail use as door stop

At over £200 per device, that will make it a very expensive door-stop!  :o

I have two of these WAPs, one of which plus a small switch and a TP-Link 5GHz outdoor WAP was stolen by a tenant who was leaving and so decided that he should just rob everything he could take from the property, down to removing light bulbs.

The marvellous local police came out all the way from Loch Carrann on the mainland late in the evening and went round to the thief to explain his options to him. Needless to say the stolen kit was all returned promptly.

And now after all that, I've gone and bricked the Zyxel WAP. I shall try Burakkucat's recipe next.

I will suggest downloading the latest firmware image from the ZyXEL site and looking at the documentation contained therein.

I have attached the ZyXEL Firmware V2.23 Release Note, below.

Appendix - C. titled "Firmware Recovery" may be relevant. It begins with the following lines --

Quote
In some rare situation, device might not boot up successfully after firmware upgrade.
The following procedures are the steps to recover firmware to normal condition. Please
connect console cable to device.

There's no need to apologise.  :)

I hope that document assists you in recovering usage of the device.
