Phone Plus Ethernet Plus 2 x Twisted Pairs
« on: March 29, 2016, 01:28:54 AM »

Is there any way to connect a Phone to my workshop and Ethernet down a 2 x twisted pair cable. ?
I also have a single core cable going to the same location and a good earth connection I could use !.

Ethernet over the twisted pair and maybe ?, then phone using the single core and earth ?, plus isolating transformers maybe ?.

Ideas please.

A pair of Planet VC-201A media converters (or similar) would be my suggestion.

Yes they look just right so, if you could lend me £787.22 for a pair would be nice, please send cheque in the post  ;D

Could I use two old modems back to back and make my own link to do the same job ?.

Do you have power in the workshop?
If so, the obvious solution is a pair of powerline adapters to carry the LAN, if it's on the same distribution board. Probably works even if not.

Or just use the 4-core for a 100mbps LAN and some sort of wireless/cordless solution (or run a 2-core cable) for the phone?
What sort of distances are involved?

DO NOT attempt the following unless fully competent with a multimeter, electrical screwdriver (and hammer?):

Alternatively, if no 'common' main connection existed between the buildings then Homeplugs (Powerline 'Ethernet' adaptors) would probably work on pretty much any old 'pair of wires' EXCEPT you wouldn't want 230V on twisted pair cable (unless it's 'heavy duty' and rated for the voltage) so would require a bit of modification to separate the power supply part from the signal part - if that's possible then they wouldn't care that the wires are not carrying 230V.  The 'signal' would likely also benefit from running over twisted pair.
(Just thinking what might be possible in slightly 're-purposing' relatively inexpensive and available technology).

[Edit to clarify (I hope)]

Attempt what? If you're referring to my suggestion have a re-read and re-think.  ;)
No screwdrivers involved....

good looking out there Al but HP was referring to power line adapters, like the ones you buy in currys/maplins and the like.

BTW tickmike i remembered what that ZyXEL kit we used was (mentioned in the post I link above). It was sDSL - that makes sense more to me now.

No, sorry HPsauce, the 'DO NOT Attempt' referred to my suggestion that a COMPETENT person could modify some Homeplugs to 'signal-only' devices (with regard to the twisted pair cable) with a separate power supply.
I was composing before you posted and didn't realise the 'conflict' with your post until now.

I'm a time served Electrician and later became a Electrical / Electronic Research Scientist (now retired ) so I may just qualify  ;D

The distance is about 150 mts cable run and yes I do have power in the workshop.

Could you not run in some network cable?
After just digging the cables in the ground I do not want to re-open the trench again.
The 2 pair SWA cable was left by OR man a few years ago when he replaced the phone service cable as we had an intermittent fault which was caused by a HR crimp joint found later, the ends where taped up at the time, I should have looked before putting it in the ground as I thought it was 4 pair . :(

Understandable,  I don't suppose either are in a conduit or ducting?
