DLink DSL-320B :: h/w rev. Z1 -vs- rev. D1
« on: December 12, 2015, 09:03:09 PM »

I think that there are two rather different looking DLink boxes both called the DLink DSL-320B, very substantial cosmetic differences between their plastic casework.

* This is a h/w rev Z1 :

I know this is true, because I have one. (More than three, in fact.)

* What is the following box? Is this a h/w rev D1 ?

I don't really have any idea what the difference is between the h/w rev Z1 and the h/w rev D1. It may be that the plastic box thing is something else, or it may be that there are true hardware design differences that are substantial, very more than just superficial.

The firmware I looked at for the D and Z were totally different. D had a Linux operating system, Z had ZynOS. I think D is Broadcom hardware and Z might actually be TrendChip (now called MediaTek).

So I/we had better start sticking a rev on the end of things when referring to them. I have been happily posting things about "DSL-320B" without any clue.

So basically every post of mine ever needs to be qualified to read
"DSL-320B h/w rev Z1"

Right now I am running Z1s on my three lines, ADSL1, 4.6 mi. by road, d/s attn ≥ "63.5" dB.

They do seem very fast and aggressive, with sync rates 2100-2400 depending on BT DLM and the whim of the ADSL gods, anyway this gives me BT IP Profile 1750 or 2000. (Is there a 2250 rung nowadays? I believe there didn't used to be - I am told there was only a 1750, 2000 and 2500.)

It certainly d/s-synced much faster than say the Draytek Vigor 130 that I have been trying. It's comparable with the Netgear DG834v3

Can anyone tell me anything more about the hardware in the Z1? Do you know which MediaTek/TrendChip device is in it?

Funny you should raise this as I was wondering.  According to the D-Link site the Z is the "standing up", slightly more curvy one, and the manual calls it a Router.  D1 is the more modem shaped one, and the manual calls it a Modem.   The A&A website is ambiguous, the for sale section shows a picture of the Z, but the wiki shows pictures of the D1 (for example the picture showing the blanked-off reset button).

So if I do end up with a separate modem, the one I want is the curvy, standing up, DSL-320B-Z?

@aesmith - Indeed. And that's what you get (nowadays) if you order something from the A & A shop.

(Perhaps the D1 was an earlier incarnation?)

And you're quite right, the A & A shop also has a graphic showing a yellow, blanked off area "do not reset" presumably from a D1, as it can't be from a Z1 as the Z1 just has a very small hole for a reset pin.

Having ordered five modems in the last year or so, including a couple very recently, it seems you always get Z1s nowadays. Lightning strike took one out and I ordered a replacement plus an extra so I would simply have one spare in stock at all times ready for the next lightning event.

It has been suggested that there was also a hardware variant A or A1. Don't know much more. G.DMT could be one of those who know something more.
