Access to PPPoE modems on far side of router
« on: January 04, 2016, 02:51:02 PM »

This topic has come up again and again, where are people ask me about stats from my three modems which are insulated behind a Firebrick router. I have usually said that I can't access them directly and the only way to get information is to get a line status report from the control server clueless.aa.net.uk.

It seems that Andrew and Arnold have cooked up a technique for accessing the modems and passing the information through to an accessible IP address using the highly flexible NAT in the Firebrick. I have not yet worked out how to do it, but I have example runes and with a bit of help I might get there.

If I can get this sorted out, what monitoring and analysis software is there for a DLink DSL-320B-Z1 ?

I think you just need to tell it the route to the router as with the HG612. If it has a Broadcom chipset it may work with DSLStats

The DSL-320B has a Broadcom chipset, so if its telnet interface is accessible then DSLstats should work with it.

(Dray got there first).

Later - It looks as though the -Z1 variety has a Trendchip chipset, so I was wrong.

I thought the DSL-320B Z1 is TrendChip based. Previous thread: http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,16583.0.html

I use PPPoE on ADSL2, I can 'Telnet' to my modem through my hardware firewall.
I also use DSLstats.

Open  'Telnet' session and try connecting to your modem 192.168.1.1 or whatever your modems IP's are.

@tickmike that's not going to work for me until I get the NAT runes sorted for my Firebrick. (At the moment, even if my router were to make the link to the modem outside the PPPoE pipe accessible, which one of the three 192.168.1.1s would I get?)

The NAT-ing config snippet that has been developed by Andrews and Arnold for someone else must work by mapping the addresses of the admin interface of each modem to one of three distinct accessible addresses.

If the modems had different fixed IP's there would not be a problem then you could telnet each one.
eg.

Modem A = 192.168.1.1
  ,,        B = 192.168.1.2
  ,,        C = 192.168.1.3

My modem HG612 is on the same IP range 192.168.0.2 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 as my LAN   192.168.0.1/24, the modem is set up for PPPoE Bridge with transparent transmission, so the above IP's have no impact on the firewall.
So my set of Fixed IP's from my ISP get passed strait through the modem (no Nat) to the Hardware-Firewall which does all the NAT and routing etc..

yeah you will need to add some kind of routing rule(s) in the firebrick to route to the second subnet.
