Bare Bones Laptop
« on: November 25, 2012, 01:39:14 AM »

I have been looking for a replacement for my daughters laptop after she thought she had damaged the one she uses a lot for uni work.
Having sorted it out for her I thought I would get another one and I could have her old one  ;) , the old one will also be on Stan-by in-case I have to take it back to her if the new one fails :o.

I found this firm.
http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/

Order placed for a '15.6" Genesis IV' Laptop, I had a 500Gb upgrade for the hard drive, NO Operating system/any software, Found you can get a further £15 off by searching for a 'Discount voucher code' ;D .
Total £315 (£81 off ).
Take about 11 Days to build.

I have dealt with that company and found them as good as any on the net.
I have had two machines from them, a tower PC and a notebook. Both arrived in a timely fashion and to the specs that I chose.
I have had no problems with either machine, as yet.

A good choice in MHO.

Seems like a good deal.

Its not always easy to find somewhere that will knock of the price of the O/S if you want to install your own.

The laptop took 10 days to build configure as they are pre-built by ( 'chassis')  by 'Clevo'  http://www.clevo.com.tw/en/products/item.asp?procatalogID=10

Well it was a good surprise for my daughter and she likes it, I have spent a lot of time last week configuring it and putting all her data back on from our backup server to which her old Acer laptop sends daily backups.

I ordered it with no software on it and was surprised when I found a (OEM )  copy of Win7 on the hard drive, I contacted the firm who built it and they say it was put on to do there testing before dispatch and I could delete it  :o

So now it's a dual boot set up with Win7 and PCLinuxOS KDE, Being that this copy of Win7 is Not being used on the internet  :D  all I did to use that copy of win7 was to put a valid code in, turned off 'Windows 30 day activation' in programs and registry, disable the internet connection in 'Networking' and not done any updates, so now it does not ask to do the 'activation'  ;).
She will use Windows to store her 'itunes' and play video's .

I know Scan also use an OEM copy of windows to test their barebones system.  Its then up to the user whether they active with their own key or delete it.   Must say they didnt leave a copy of the disk in the drive though :D

Of late I seem to be setting up a few of these SAMSUNG Series 3 3530E 15.6" Laptop which were on sale before xmas for £340 ish.  Considering it contained the o/s it wasnt a bad deal.

However since that offer is no longer on..  Ive currently got a slightly higher spec version of the same series 3 which had £60 off if you ordered it direct rather than instore.   Thats my job for today once the battery is fully charged.
