Spec differences TP-Link TD-W8960N ; TD-W8961ND
« on: April 09, 2012, 12:58:38 PM »

TP-Link TD-W8960N has been recommended as a good Broadcom (6358) router (more reliable than TH 585 v7. But there's also TD-W8961ND, which is a little cheaper. Specs other than dimensional appear minimal, and are below, What and how significant are they; is the cheaper one Broadcom (6358) too?

Code: [Select]
TD-W8960N
Buttons: QSS
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), DHCP reservation

TD-W8961ND
Buttons: WPS, Wi-Fi On/Off Button
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), DHCP relay

Thanks for any forthcoming advice. :)

I'd recommend you get a router with OpenWRT support. Also, it may be worth looking at getting a cable router an an ADSL modem, that way if you ever switch to VDSL2 eg BT Infinity then your router can be carried over. I personally use the WR1043ND with OpenWRT and it's great. Gigabit ethernet, 300mbps wifi for about £40. Until I got my FTTC install I was using my old router as a bridge, basically making it a modem.

Hi Ben! FTTC is only forecast to give 26.2 sync against 8800 day, 7800 if resync at night.

With my usage pattern FTTC hardly seems worth the cost. This ignoramus  does not know what Open WRT is. :-[ :o :)

I recently found my Netgear DG834G was generating some hash on the broadcast radio frequencies, so I bought a TP-Link W8961ND as replacement. It has been a bit of a nightmare with very flaky connection; constantly having to be reset (soft and hard) in order to get it to lock in to the adsl/internet. When on it is quite reliable, but still drops out sometimes. Wireless is good though!
Looking at forums it seems the Netgear is well known to be very good at hanging onto poor lines.

I've  noted in the Amazon customer reviews, amongst others, posts that suggest the TP router has deteriorated since the last firmware upgrade.
