My WD Essentials 250GB is now showing its lack of capacity, so I shall need to buy a larger portable hard drive.
Of the current makes and models have you guys any that you would recommend or warn against?
Thanks in advance for any reply and advice.

I think any of the big names are very good...WD,Seagate,Buffalo and Freecom.Usually you have 3.5" desktop drives, which usually have their own power supply of the smaller 2.5" potable drives which usually are connected via usb

I've had a Freecom 250Gb external hard drive for a few years now which I have found very reliable. I got it from Scan Computers -
www.scan.co.uk
- who have a very big range on offer.

I use a 2 TB Western Digital Elements USB drive like
this one.
I leave it switched on all the time, and it goes to sleep when it's not being used. When I plug in the USB lead, the drive wakes up and becomes available for use. It's practically silent. For my purposes it's as near perfect as anything could be.
