Totally confused
« on: August 29, 2010, 11:27:49 AM »

Firstly, apologies as im not that technically minded and this is my first post on here,i will try and keep it brief and would appreciate any advice anyone out there can give.

My max speed is 250kbps(download) upload 376(kpbs)

My exchange is Sowerby Bridge.

When i check with BT Wholesale on my current telephone number it confirms this is the max i can receive,ie it says very unlikely to receive 256 or 512.
However on the same BT Wholesale check if i do the check with house number and postcode it says i can receive up to 5.5.
If i do a check and say i dont currently have a bt line,it says i can receive up to 5.5.

Im only 1.15km from the exchange and the exchange is ADSL enabled.

I have spoke with BT about having a new line(at my expense) on the basis that the BT wholesale check says i can obtain up to 5.5,but as they then look at my current line and say i could only receive 250kbps.i then reiterate that i want a new line, but we just go round in circles.

Im trying to establish whether a new line will actually enable me to obtain faster speeds as the exchange is enabled and i only live a short distance away, but no one at BT seems to know the answer.

There must be some reason why my line cannot receive any faster speed,i quite simply would like to know what the problem is and whether or not there is a solution.Surely if they know what the max speed on the line currently obtainable is,someone within BT must know why this is the max.

Im totally confused by the fact that BT Wholesales own checker gives two completely conflicting obtainable speeds.

Ive spent hours on the phone to BT,but just get nowhere.

Any advice is welcomed

Hi and welcome,

The first thing to check is what your current router stats are. If you're not sure how to get this information, this page should help you. Armed with that information we'll have a better idea of what you should expect.

I don't know if this dodge still works, but I found this on a net search:

The N1 Vision Modem Router (F5D8632-uk4) has a hidden developer page :

http://192.168.2.1/wukongjiuwo.html

On this page is a console/command line box. In there, type :

adslctl info --stats

and click enter.

You'll get a stream of information, and the parts you want are:

upstream and downstream attenuation
upstream and downstream connection speed
upstream and downstream noise margin

With a downstream attenuation of 58db you should sync at just under 3000kbps with an IP profile of 2500kbps.

Can you plug your router directly into the BT master socket, thus eliminating any internal wiring problems.

You can also do a BT quiet line test to see if there is any interference on your line.Phone 17070 and select option 2.

Its already in the master socket and ive also tried the test socket.

Have tried the quiet line test and its quiet(no hissing or crackling).

When you tried the test socket, did you check the router connection speed, or just the actual download speed? The reason I ask is that even if the connection speed increased, the actual download speed wouldn't increase for some days, because of the way the BT IP profile system works.

Hi Turfed out,

Not immediately as Roseway says it can take days for your IP profile to adjust, but if you collect the modem statistics again you can see if the download synchronisation speed increases quite dramatically which is a prerequisite for the IP profile to rise.

If these things fail then you need to consider your next moves.

I'm assuming your ISP is BT and sadly you only have CarPhoneWarehouse available for LLU services.

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/MYSOW

Firstly you should understand that BT line estimates are precisely that and that they can be wildly out.
We've had one around here which was supposed to achieve 6 Mbps but barley maintains synchronisation with an IP profile of 135 Kbps,
See also http://www.ewhurst-broadband.org.uk/?cat=4

IMHO there is no point whatever in paying BT more money for a new phone line without any guarantee of improvement and No Universal Service Obligation.
You should obtain a different modem EDIT and filter(s) to be absolutely sure yours is not on the point of failing completely.
You probably then require your line to be retrained over the 10 day period to reset the line parameters hopefully to obtain more reasonable speeds.
You have then either to grind on with your ISP via possibly many calls to Asia, or to obtain your MAC (Migration Authorisation Code) and select a reputable ISP who will be prepared to get BT O to investigate your line.

Zen Internet or AAISP are two possible ones amongst many but they will be slightly more expensive.
I have had a number of successes with Zen but I do realise they have the wrong coloured roses in Rochdale !

Kind regards,
Walter

My ISP is Virgin and they are totally disinterested ,i asked them for MAC code in the hope they would take an interest, but to no avail.

Out of interest my next door neighbor is getting speeds consistently over 3000.His line runs from the same telegraph pole, which keeps me thinking that the problem lies between the pole and my house.

Any way i will try the test socket and post the stats.

Thanks

If you ask Virgin for a MAC they are duty bound to give you one within five working days.

Out of interest, is your neighbour also with Virgin ?

Virgin gave me the MAC immediately,i was rather hoping that when i asked for it they may actually try and help.

What does that tell you about an isp.

What other LLu enable isp's do you have available at your exchange.?
