ADSL2 -- Performance Improvement
« on: May 17, 2010, 12:15:11 PM »

Hi Folks,

I am a recent visitor to your site and I find it interesting and informative.
I am a Vodafone.ie ADSL customer using a Voyager 210 modem. I have been advised by my ISP that I about to be upgraded to rate adaptive "up to 8Mb " ADSL2.

My question is can some of you experts review my line statistics and advise me what improvement I can expect after the upgrade.

Modem stats. as follows:

Broadband Line Status

Line Mode   G.DMT       Line State   Show Time
Latency Type   Interleave       Line Up Time   01:20:21:49
Line Coding   Trellis On       Line Up Count   1

   Statistics   Downstream   Upstream
Line Rate   2048 Kbps   256 Kbps
Noise Margin   15.2 dB   31.0 dB
Line Attenuation   45.0 dB   24.0 dB
Output Power   0.1 dBm   16.8 dBm
K (number of bytes in DMT frame)   65   9
R (number of check bytes in RS code word)   14   16
S (RS code word size in DMT frame)   2   16
   D (interleaver depth)   32   4
   Super Frames   2856426    9394605
   Super Frame Errors   3    0
   RS Words   97118484    39927071
   RS Correctable Errors   36426    44
   RS Uncorrectable Errors   6    0
   HEC Errors   2    0
   OCD Errors   0    0
   LCD Errors   0    0
   ES Errors   0    0

I attach also a DMT screenshot.

Looking forward to your comments

Regards

Hi Ruby hall and welcome,

If you enter your attenuation is this page you will see that you are under-performing according to Kitz's estimator.

Thanks for your response.

I have attempted to use the calculator to which you refer. As you indicate it does produce results which are higher than any value I have experienced. However the results are calculated for DSLmax and ADSL2+.

My current system is ADSL version 1 and my updated system will be ADSL2.
How do those systems relate to DSLmax and ADSL2.

Also the calculator automatically calculates a line length  -- in my case 3.3km. My estimate of my distance from the exchange is 2.7 km.

Apologies if my queries seem naive but I am on a steep learning curve.

Regards

It looks as though the present connection is a fixed 2 Mbps service, so the connection speed should increase considerably after an upgrade to ADSL2+.

Hello again RubyHall,

For these purposes DSL max is similar to ADSL 1 and I'd ignore the differences between ADSL2 and 2+ for the time being.
Note also the words of caution below the estimator.

You have an approximate hint of maximum ADSL1 sync. speed with the RCO value of 3488 kbps.

Actual speeds will depend upon your line's condition so just be patient ! Come back if the speed isn't as high as you might expect.

Line lengths can vary significantly even from road distances. You could double check your distance using:-

Kind regards,
Walter

Probably not a very meaningful figure given it's a fixed-rate connection so the SNRM is artificially high.
I'd expect it to be around 3 times faster (could be 2 could be 4)  ;)

Hi

See  What frequencies are used? at
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/adsl_technology.htm
for explanation of the differences in expected connection speeds .
