However, this thread does raise the question of whether a cut in power for very short periods of time might not be recognised as a break from the router to the exchange. I wonder?

Modems/ADSL routers are normally built with fairly large capacitors, and this allows them to retain enough power long enough to send a 'dying gasp' message to the exchange/DSLAM, informing it that the connection is about to be dropped.  Presumably if the power outage is short enough to prevent activating this process then there will not be a loss of connection, however I would have thought that it would be measured in milliseconds rather than seconds.

On another note, the PPP connection between the modem and ISP is effectively managed by the  Link Control Process (LCP).

A straightforward explanation of this process can be seen @:

Thank you.

I'll read the links.

In the meantime, I was looking at the event logs in the router.

There seems to be a src IP in China trying to communicate with my WAN address.

However, all these tries have been met with the red light.

How usual is this?

The type mentioned is: 'Time Exceeded Code: Time To Live Exceeded In Transit'.

This looks like a block simply due to lack of time rather a calculated block.

Any comments welcome.

Thanks

Internet connections are exposed to random intrusion attempts all the time. Your router's firewall is doing what it's supposed to do.

Hi

Not sure how long an actual loss of power can be before PPP is lost.
Some related information ..

PPP will maintain connection during an SNR margin Tweak initiated by user (where router supports this ) and

SNR /synch reset by the DSLAM   **

This then means that the PPP uptime is larger than the WAN uptime (connection to the exchange)
When this happens the counters  below are reset to 0
SF:
SF Errors:
Reed Solomon:
RS Corrected:
RS Un-Corrected:
HEC:
so checking the above should help to determine if the connection to the exchange has been lost , even if synch speed /snr margin appears unchanged .

**  a common result is that there is an increase in
 CRCs (in the hundreds )
and smallish increases in ,typically
LOS:  +1
LOF:  +9
ES :   +1

BUT those below are NOT reset
CRC:
LOS:
LOF:
ES :

They appear to  only be reset by rebooting Router .

This is the behaviour I have seen with both  the DG834 GT and DG834g v4

Regards Jeff

Thanks for the additional information. Do you know the location of the data (Thomson TG585v7).

Best wishes.

Roseway.

Thanks for the information.

When you say random attacks. Does this mean that some computers are simply dialing-up random ISP numbers in the hope of breaking in. I assume that the point of this is that they are trying to control the client machines for spam purposes.

Best wishes

Something like that. The attacks can come from criminals looking for something to exploit, spammers trying to take over machines for advertising purposes, or just hooligans trying to break things. It's a fact of life on the internet.
