That's because the downstream would be transmitting at high power from the exchange and would interfere with upstream signals of other lines in the same bundle.

Gentlefolk,

It's a glorious sunny cold day down in Ewhurst so everything's so much better this morning !
Apart from this quip, it's also a bank holiday so it's possible there's less noise around at present.

Kitz's theory on marginal differences re 2 bits or none seems absolutely correct.

The first picture is just after the modem decided to reconnect.

The second is after I forced a re-sync.

It's interesting to note the sync speed reported hasn't changed but the bit loading has a little, although the total numbers of bits are 160 and 158 respectively.
The IP profile is still at 250 kbps so I can't yet see how the real throughput might have improved since yesterday.

Kind regards,
Walter

Gentlefolk,

Here's the next installment of the saga.

At 15:42:33 yesterday the modem had a significant wobbly which resulted in an unstable connection.
The download speed incresed to 512 kbps, never before has it been so fast. However the Upstream dropped to 128 kbps and then 64 kbps for a short time.
We also had a new Inconsistent Signal error.

I've reset the modem this morning and it has returned to a more normal condition with a reasonable (for this long line) up and down load speeds.
When doing so the message says Idle Request.

Has anybody an idea what might have caused this anomally ?
I have a feeling there's been some human intervention somewhere.

Kind regards,
Walter
