Bt broadband, Speed Issue
« on: January 09, 2010, 10:05:38 PM »

Good evening all,

I have had a good read of the site and I dont think I can do any more but its worth asking, can anybody help.

Today I have changed the master socket (27 years old) for a BT Openreach Filtered Faceplate and socket.
Also replaced the Black BT Hub for a Netgear DGN2000.

My line stats are as follows

Connection Speed 2816 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation   59.0 db      31.0 db
Noise Margin        7.8 db        18.0 db

Cant find a hidden page for this router.

My line speed is just under 2mb and Iplayer is only just working any hints of what else can be done?
Is there any benifit installing custom firmware to the router?
Or Installing the DMT tool I have had a look at the DMT but dont really understand it!

Thanks In Advance

Rob

The speed seems reasonable for the line length (attenuation).
If you want something faster you'll have to move home or switch to cable if available.

I wish cable was a offer.

I had problems in my last house and ordered BT vision knowing it would not work.
An engineer called and changed my line from the exchange and I soon got speeds up to 7mb.

I have now had a play with the DMT and I am syncing at 3104 I dont know how this will effect the internet.

Your previous connection speed was right at the top of the range for an IP profile of 2000 kbps, and if you can hold onto your new speed you will move up to the next IP profile of 2500 kbps. You might be lucky, but there's no guarantee.

You might try using plug-in filters for your telephones and Sky box if you have one, even though you already have a filtered faceplate. It's grasping at straws, but it might just give you a small performance boost.

I have seen on the bt web site about paying £90 for an engineer to come out and if he/she can't raise your speed by 0.5mb the call out will be free. Has anybody got any reviews on this?

Basically all they do is either remove the ring wire or fit an i-plate (which has the same effect as the i-plate isolates the bell wire).

You can do this yourself for free by following the instructions http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm

That looks fairly normal for a high attenuation line like yours.

Hi
Those stats look pretty good for your line attenuation. In fact your synch speed is more than the expected 2752Kbps  :)
see this link

cheers jeff,

I might order bt vision again and get my pair swapped on to the other line from the exchange then cancel.

It worked last time.
