Which SNMP sensors to use in DSL-2740B
« on: August 29, 2009, 08:30:35 AM »

After getting my ADSL connection sorted I have gone back to my Dlink DSL-2740B router as it seems very stable on my line and supports SNMP which the DG834GT does not even with the DGTeam firmware.

I want to monitor my bandwidth usage and am wondering which of the 12 available sensors would be the one (or ones) to use. I am not bothered about which PC uses the bandwidth (we have 3 most of the time) but merely keep an eye on the total connection traffic. I am using the freeware PRTG from Paessler which supports up to 10 sensors, but I dont want to use any more than necessary. So far I've not found any docs on what each of these sensors actually monitor. I'm guessing that either the ATM or the PPP ones would be useful but I'd like to try to find out what each of the 12 does do. Has anyone any ideas?

Dunno if it helps but using MRTG Im monitoring :
Interface eth0 for my lan
and adsl for total traffic..  which on yours looks like it would be #2(dsl0)

I'm not certain - but ATM traffic may also give you the same/similar as dsl?

Thanks for the suggestion Kitz, I'll take a look. I find it a bit strange that I cannot find any decent information about these. I'll have to try Dlink themselves.

The 'sensors' are actually the router interfaces which are configured into your router

I'm guessing here.. but I would image

#1 loopback - NAT loopback traffic - used to redirect (lan) to the other (wan) side of the router for say http/ftp servers
#2 dsl0 - The adsl interface
#3 atm0 - the atm interface
#4 cpcs0 - the ATM Adaptation Layer 5 interface
#5 eth0 - LAN side traffic
#6 wl0 - Wireless interface
#7 br0 - bridge???
#8 eth0.2 - LAN port 1
#9 eth0.3 - LAN port 2
#10 eth0.4 - LAN port 3
#11 eth0.5 - LAN port 4
#12 ppp - the PPP interface

AIUI
adsl records your connection details, sync, channel modes (Interleaving), FECS (RS errors), CRCs, framing errors and frame totals
atm records things like HEC/OCD/ES errors and ATM cell totals

dsl0 would be anything going out/in on the WAN side
eth0 anything passing through on the LAN side.

>> I want to monitor my bandwidth usage

Just a note - MRTG (not sure about PRTG) monitors real-time throughput and it doesnt automatically total the bandwidth for you for over 'x' period of time.
Mine is a bit messed up right now but see attachments below for examples of some old ones.

There is another add-in perl module with MRTG that will total and mail the monthly totals to you... but I dont actually have that running (read - havent managed to configure it) :/

PRTG does provide total throughput figures as well as a breakdown of up and down stream. I run a weekly and monthly report off in PDF format and it runs a web server as well so you can view the data from any PC on the Lan. It really is quite powerful and supports 10 sensors in the free edition. The limit of ten sensors is why I need to work out the best to use as I do run a packet sniffer on one PC as well as monitoring two other PCs.

#7 br0 - bridge???
#8 eth0.2 - LAN port 1
#9 eth0.3 - LAN port 2
#10 eth0.4 - LAN port 3
#11 eth0.5 - LAN port 4

Well I dont know what BR0 is but it does register traffic, AFAIK I dont use a bridge mode in the router.  The Lan ports appear to be numbered  in reverse order so 5 is port 1 etc, as I only use ports 1-3 but #8 in this list is not connected which would equate to port 4.

br0 is probably the name applied to the bridge for the wireless-LAN interface.

Thats quite good - one of the reasons why I didnt use PRTG several years ago was because of the (then iirc) limitation of only 3 sensors. :)

It wont be anything youve set up... the interfaces are preconfigured into the router.
Im a wee bit out of my depth here (corrections welcome), but it could well be to do with the 'switch' part of the router whereby the LAN ports are configured as virtual interfaces.
eth0.2 (and eth0.3 etc) indicates virtual interfaces.  When setting up these virtual interfaces, these will then need to be bridged to eth0 which is the router LAN side.
eth0 being a physical (network) card.

br0 is probably the name applied to the bridge for the wireless-LAN interface.

I dont have the wireless enabled and #6 WL0 is the wireless interface, if BR0 is a bridge to wireless I wonder why it would show traffic when wireless is disabled?

Sorry, I was meaning wireless & LAN interfaces.

Have a look here at this OpenWrt info.
