BT Customer - Unbelivebly Slow
« on: February 19, 2009, 06:13:06 PM »

Hey there.

Im connected to my router by cable, i am the only active connection and the router itself is plugged into the main phone line, ive tried changing the faceplate, the micrfilter etc.....getting a little tired of BT's support.

Here are my connection details:

This Test comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 114 kbps

and the router report:

ADSL line status
Connection information
Line state Connected
Connection time 2 days, 2:16:47
Downstream 8,128 Kbps
Upstream 448 Kbps

ADSL settings
VPI/VCI 0/38
Type PPPoA
Modulation ITU-T G.992.1
Latency type Interleave
Noise margin (Down/Up) 6.4 dB / 29.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up) 26.0 dB / 16.5 dB
Output power (Down/Up) 19.8 dBm / 11.8 dBm

from my understanding this should be a good connection! but i seem to get abismal speeds all the time. that is the 10th or so test ive run and the results have been almost identical.

any advice?

Hi Snorlax,

Your connection data seems very good indeed, except for the throughput.

This suggests some other type of problem rather than the broadband connection itself such as your firewall settings or DNS settings.

It would help if you provide details of your computer together with any firewall details and the modem type and its settings.

Kind regards,
Walter

ok,

the router is the BT Home Hub 2.0
Ive changed nothing settings wise, so it is 'how bt intended it'... i litterly plugged it in when it arrived 2 months ago and had no luck since.

I dont think its my PC, as i have a laptop which i connect with wirelessly and that has the same issues? I have also used a friends desktop PC through the same connections and suffered the same problems.

I am unsure what details to give to regarding the DNS.

Hi

Did you get the option from the BT test to do another different test?

"Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 114 kbps". normally its offered when the throughput is deemed to be unacceptably low. This is definitely that .If I remember correctly <300Kbps normally triggers it (or thereabout).

I was asked if i wished to do an alternative test if i was confident to manipulate the username and password of the router. I am not happy about doing this unless i absolutly have to.

Yep irrc its < 400 kbps.

snorlax - your line looks fine - your stats and IPprofile would display some other symtoms otherwise...  and as others have said this looks more like a 'local issue' within the home.

Is your wireless secure?  Is there anything on any of the PCs that could be running something which could be eating your bandwidth?
~ Ensure nothing else is using your bandwidth.
Are your speeds like that 24/7 or are there certain times of the day when things get better.

Try grabbing a copy of Netmeter.  Install it then go somewhere like here and download the 15Mb file.  Watch the Netmeter graph whilst that file is downloading and see what speeds it records your PC as getting.
Netmeter is a very useful tool for monitoring your traffic and seeing whats going on on your PC. When you do the test make sure that there are no other PCs switched on that could also be using your bandwidth.
