Help with Livebox router stats and IP Profile
« on: February 09, 2009, 09:52:52 PM »

Hi hopefully someone will be able to help point me in the right direction. I have an Thomson Livebox and have been looking at my router stats which are as follows:

ModulationType  ADSL_G.dmt
ATMEncapsulation  VCMUX
ModemFirmwareVersion  bcm96358_ADSL_PHY_A2pBT009c1.d17d
Status  Up
LinkStatus  Up
LinkType  PPPoA
DataPath  Fast
UpstreamAttenuation  195
DownstreamAttenuation  360
UpstreamNoiseMargin  220
DownstreamNoiseMargin  68
UpstreamMaxRate  1056000
DownstreamMaxRate  8896
UpstreamCurrRate  448
DownstreamCurrRate  8128
UpstreamPower  121
DownstreamPower  198

What I am confused with are the  UpstreamAttenuation/DownstreamAttenuation and UpstreamNoiseMargin/DownstreamNoiseMargin values as i was expecting to see them in db should i be taking theses values as 19.5db, 36.0db, 22.0db and 6.8db respectively.

If this is the case would you say that 2000kbps is a low setting for my IP Profile as when I use the BT speed tester that is what I am getting back ?

Thanks for any help in advance.

It's wrong, unless you're on a rate-limited service. Should be 7150.

I'm on Orange upto 8mb unlimited broadband. Does this mean I am looking at a stuck IP profile  ?

Looks like it. Give them a call. And let us know what they say. ;)

Cheers will do that. Can someone just confirm that I was right when I was determining the readings for downstream/upstream attenuation and noise.

Can't 100% confirm, but your assumption results in sensible and consistent numbers.

It looks like a firmware bug and the decimal point is missing for the attenuation and SNRM.
The figures certainly fit if there was one in there before the last number.

It does looks like you do have a stuck bRAS profile, although looking at your stats, your line falls just very slightly over/ in the upper parameters for those that tend to get stuck.. although youre on 6dB target and still syncing with a bit to spare.
Im also looking at your power output (you are running at full power) so its not one that should see getting stuck often.

When did you get Max'd - have you tried a resync?

Problems all sorted now.

Just to clear a few things up this was a new line so it was the first time that broadband had been enabled. When I first connected broadband the IPProfile stayed at 2000kbps for about 3 days the profile has now moved to 6500kbps which is what I expected as i had moved the router away from the master socket and had synced at about 7700kbps.

I guess the only thing I am left wondering is when you first connect and the 10 day training period starts does the IPProfile get capped at 2000kbps before it has enougth data to determine the true value for the IPProfile.

Thanks for all your help.

No worries, it was interesting to see how those stats were presented, may well be useful in future.  :)

>>> I guess the only thing I am left wondering is when you first connect and the 10 day training period starts does the IPProfile get capped at 2000kbps

In theory your line should pick up the correct profile within 45 mins of going live on max.  The default profile is 2000 which is what BTw uses until your first profile catches up.

There are some lines that do get stuck, but I have noticed certain characteristics on the type of lines that this generally tends to occur on and I have my own theory why this occurs. Yours wasnt really one that quite fitted that (youre running at full power)  and your stats were on the upper boundary.  Hence me wondering when you got maxed.

For some reason the DLM does seem to be a little slow of late to catch up with some profiles and Ive seen a few changes over the past few weeks take a lil bit longer on some lines than I would have expected according to the rules. :/

ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : ADSL2
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 34.1
Attenuation (dB) : 21.5
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 7195
ADSL status : Connected

  Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 1021 285

Above are my live box stats a bout 2 weeks ago reach replaced the connection from pole to house as issues with analogue voice calls engineer stated all 4 corse were broken.... since then my speed has been between 0.2 and 0.4 Mbps peaking today at 0.8Mbps previously ran a good 5-6.5Mbps noise margin seems too high and orange are being difficult I have tried to get my line regraded as i know they down grade and cap lines with faults but with open reach perfroming maintenance on the line so recently is there anyway i can get them to come out and measure the noise?

Looks to me that your on a 1meg fixed speed line, the up/downstream speed indicate this.

snr is represented differently on a fixed speed service compaired to a rate adaptive.

in which case 34.1 is very good.

you need to keep on at your isp to find out what they're up to
