Ah, I noticed that it was publishing an SSID.

Is the signal blue or green LEDs ?

I'm currently seeing the ZTE thrash a 5g router for speed and latency.

Will have to fire it up today again to check. I didn’t make a note at the time. I’ll have to find the factory reset procedure somewhere.

I’ve suddenly had a brainwave. Perhaps I had forgotten to disconnect my own main router soon enough. It was certainly disconnected later, as I got Janet to check. Maybe the ZTE acquires an admin IPv4 address from DHCP if there’s an existing router around, rather than using 192.168.1.1. But maybe the Firebrick, my main router, was still plugged in at the time the ZTE was first fired up. That would explain everything.

That would make sense.

I would power it up detached from your network and see if you can connect to the WiFi.

Port 1 can be used to interface to a modem.

Finally managed to get my beloved to help me, now she’s not so busy and is feeling better. Tried hole-poking (for ~20 s after power-on) to get a factory reset and then tried to connect wirelessly to the ZTE’s published SSID using the PSK that is printed on a label on the base. That failed, can see an SSID named Three_xxxx something or other, but failed the password challenge. I could try some other guesses that I see listed at:
    https://www.192-168-1-1-ip.co/router/zte/mf286/9288/

So next, I once again tried wireful access. Did things in the right order this time round. Disconnected my DHCP server (Firebrick router) from main switch, once again poked holes, then set up suitable IP/netmask/gateway for my iPad and tried http://192.168.1.1 no joy, can’t even ping it. So never got a chance to try passwords. I should be using the right IPv4 address for it, as there is no DHCP server around.

So absolutely no luck at all, no matter what I try. I wondered about filming the boot-up sequence, focusing in on the LEDs’ states. Would that be of any use? Where’s the best place to upload the video to?

Hmm . . . Looking at that Quick Start Guide that I shared with you, it states --

Change router settings

You can change the router settings by logging in to the administrator web page.

Login to the Admin Webpage:

1. Launch the web browser and enter http://192.168.32.1 in the address bar. The login page appears.

Did you try the 192.168.32.1 IPv4 address?

Your YouTube Account would be my first suggestion.  :)

Out at present, can fire up my one later.

Does the wps button on top of the unit not work?

@Burakkucat - That’s the reward I get from trusting random web pages courtesy of Google. Should have noticed that strange address in your document. Will try that next.

Ok,

Got mine in front of me, default gateway is 192.168.0.1
admin login is admin
admin password is on the bottom of the router.

Global firmware ZTE mf286d have 192.168.32.1 as the default IP, but three unlocked ones have 192.168.0.1

Thank you for clarifying the addresses used for each particular situation.

Got ipv6 up and running by turning off the modem in the middle of the web interface, creating a new APN with ipv4ipv6 as type and turning the modem back on.

Wow. Whose is the APN, or is it local, a component within the device itself? I’m wondering what the MTU is. This means I might not have to use the AA IPv6 tunnel any more when using mobile networking ( via Three, with my 3G dongle and AA/AQL SIM.)

If you boot your device while it’s connected to a LAN that has a DHCPv4 server running, does that server’s presence cause the ZTE to pick up an address? Or is it always 192.168.0.1 ?

Wires mf286d into wireless mesh, wires laptop into mf286d, turns wireless off.

Ok, I've been given dhcp on the wireless mesh, zte stays on 192.168.0.1.

APN is EE, as it’s an EE sim.
From powered on, I’d reset the mf286d for 45 seconds.

Any chance you can post a photo of the bottom of the mf286d?
