The petrol one though is really stupid with the fraction of pence - I really dont see the point.

Presumably that's the decimal point???

Someone was commenting on this on the Plusnet forum after they introduced their new Essential product. The reply was that research has been done on the 99p business and people do actually believe that they are getting someone cheaper and will be more likely to buy. So it appears that it is all down to the consumer really.
Technically, it is cheaper but what can you do with a penny (answers on a postcard please)?

Our local village shop (I used to own) still sells 1p sweets  ;D,  we started to sell them 15 years ago and there is still a good profit margin on them.

I remember buying them at that price when I was at primary school.  The same shop used to also sell marbles at 4 for a penny, or 25 for sixpence. :) ... and you can still buy black jacks & fruit salads. :)

They are still available, but not for that price, more like 1p each.
It our shop if it was busy we sell the children 10p or 50p bags  of sweets we filled, but if it was not busy we let the children choose what 1p sweets they wanted and sometimes that was a long process  :-\..
We kept the 1p sweets under the glass fronted counter so that they would nag there parents to buy some, just one more way to increase turnover. ;)
