Billion 8800NL R2
« on: August 19, 2016, 03:04:55 PM »

After the fool in me decided to get rid of my somewhat solid but annoying TP-Link Archer C9 and HG613 combination and replace it with BT untrustworthy Smart Hub (or 2 in my case) I was left with no choice but to use my old super-rubbishy HH5 to get by...

This start out OK but over the last few days has just given up on WiFi and keeps crashing, luckily I use an AC87U access point which is far better at getting my 5G devices connected and is fast too.

I've decided to get the Billion router mentioned hoping that simplicity is the way to go and only having 2-5 devices restricted to 2G only I shouldn't find many issues if any,

I'm hoping the wifi chip and firmware will be smart enough to fight of my neighbours obtrusive wifi networks and that I will at last be from from the intermittent freezing of my household and the moans and groans that sound from other household members.

Anyone got any reviews on this device.

I always use manual wifi settings, most routers will show you what others channels are in use.
My neigbours are on channel 6 at 2.4Ghz none at 5Ghz  :)
So I use channel 11 at 2.4Ghz and channel 100 on 5Ghz.

If I use auto channel both would be fighting it out at bottom of channel range, along with everyone else :(
Use mobile phone app wifi radar and go for a walk around the area, to find what other channels are being used.

ouch! I pretty much have channels 6 and 11 to myself on 2.4ghz
If my WiFi was that congested I'd be buying something that's also 5ghz capable

My 5G network is at the top (McLaren-5) ...

It's a 5Ghz only Access point.

Looking at that lot pretty well the only wifi left will be 5Ghz only :(
If you still want anything on 2.4Ghz .. only channel 8? or 13?

Yeah I as going to aim for 13 to be honest... would using 40mhz (so 13 - 9) cause me anymore issues or should it just slow down when others are utilizing spectrum.

It might not be as bad as it looks, wifi scanner programs don't show various factors, most important is perhaps how heavily used each network is.

Channels 1 and 6 may have problems with the overlapping networks on channels 3 and 4, channel 11 may be slowed down a little due to the extra protection mechanisms due to the 11g network (which appears to be fairly close), and the network on channel 9 probably isn't helping channels 6 and 11 either.

In theory it's worse to partly overlap than be on the same channel as another network, and attempting to use 40 MHz of bandwidth would probably be even worse.

Channel 1 only really has 2 BT Home Hub 5s, although one appears to have some wireless extenders, plus there's what are presumably one company's networks.

The G network (ICON) is my label printer.... it starts broadcasting when it can't get connected to wireless (which at the moment is a big problem)

Doesn't your link advise against using channel 13 considering all the things on 11?

Sorry  :-[ overlooked that bit. I was trying to demonstrate that using 20 rather than 40Mhz would yield better wifi coverage by narrowing channel allocation.
In his case he may need to consider abandoning 2.4Ghz and just use 5Ghz.

Or just use the same channel as other networks, it's not necessarily the problem.
