The DLink is cheap £20, preconfigured correctly from the A&A shop
    http://aa.net.uk/broadband-accessories.html
(must be configured as a modem before use, this is essential as it doesn't work properly otherwise). And as it is a modem only, you will need a router that has an Ethernet WAN port to go to the modem.

gt94sss2, the resource has no data for our line.

Did you try the Address Checker?

I'd missed this resource.

WBC ADSL2+ & WBC ADSL2+ (Annex M), Upstream rate 1, Downstream rate 5.5 - 12.  Although it does stay these figures are only indicative.

Weaver, thank you, I will check it out.  So the HG523a stays and acts as a wireless transmitted/receiver cool and I create a bridge to the second router upstairs, connecting it to the USB printer.  That would make my father very happy; tree's, not so much.

Remember the separate modem plan requires you to have a router with an Ethernet WAN port on it, that is an Ethernet port meant to go to a modem, as well as the one or more LAN-side Ethernet ports. Need to check that your router has this!!

You mentioned Broadcom. The DLink DSL-320B-Z1 is not Broadcom-based. It's just very good on extremely long lines, which yours isn't, but definitely well worth a try even on a more modest line.

Thank you Weaver, I'll have a look into this method and post in advance of making any changes.
