Moved from Virgin to Sky...why!
« on: April 22, 2015, 07:55:24 PM »

Hi

I was here long ago with ADSL issues and finally tracked my issue down to a faulty PSU for a PC in a house opposite. Long gone are those days and i moved into a Virgin area and got the 152Mbps service and all was good!

I ave now moved again into a new estate with no Virgin so i went for VDSL.

The first day the Engineer could not find a dial tone so someone else came on day 2. The builders had cabled the master socket to the upstairs faceplate so bt jelly crimped it to downstairs where i have two extensions...on a split system.

These were the stats:

Connection Speed   39998 kbps   9435 kbps
Line Attenuation           22.4 dB   0.0 dB
Noise Margin      18.6 dB   6.6 dB

So i thought i would check the proper speed and connected the router upstairs removing the extensions:

Connection Speed   39998 kbps   9999 kbps
Line Attenuation           18.3 dB   0.0 dB
Noise Margin      26.4 dB   14.14 dB

Nice...until for a week i had no dail tone. Thinking it was me i connected it all back up to the extension etc and the stats went back to the first set. Still no dail tone etc so i logged a fault and it came back as a frames fault.

Engineer attended yesterday and suggested (hesitantly) that is was a new installation and someone 'moved' my cable around the cabinets the incorrect way running it in the front of the cab or whatever.

He repaired and i have a phone line however the stats are now:

Connection Speed   39919 kbps   7345 kbps
Line Attenuation           22.5 dB   0.0 dB
Noise Margin           6.4 dB   6.6 dB

So...any ideas what has happened? I explained the stats were terrible compared but he said im getting 40/10 so its fine.

Any ideas...could a single installation be causing this much cross talk or im possibly thinking bridge tap? I miss Virgin so much right now :(

Loss of 20dB on the downstream SNRm is bad.

You have also lost upstream speed, so youre not getting 40/10   The fact you are on the 40/10 is masking the issue.

What does the checker say you should be getting.

Hi Kitz

Here are the results. I agree that the fact im only on the 40/10 Sky service is masking the fact that i have experienced an issue due to a new line installation somewhere and the engineer who did that job did something to my service. I was tempted to try the 80/20 but this perhaps wont help a deal besides perhaps getting BT to attend again as i wont get close to my recommended speeds.

.

Noway i will be able to get anything more on my line with a 6db snr. Wish i knew what happened. My voice side of the line is perfect now. Im wondering if i ask sky to perform a line test will pick anything up.

Is it due to the change in attenuation?

I can understand the attenuation drop and snr relating etc but on the extension it was 18db and now 6db and that moved around alot from 4db to 6.6db when previously it would move from 18 in .1 increments down and up during the day.

My two options are hope it gets worse so i can report it or upgrade and see what happens. I think i will give it a few weeks.

I mean the attenuation which has changed

First 22.4
Then 18.3
Now 22.5

I can't see where it was 6 or 4 or 6.6.

With your current stats you're not going to get the full 80/20 :(

I think what Dray is saying is that there is obvious degredation between the extension sockets ie 22.4 -> 18.3 dB.
So it may be worthwhile attempting a new set of stats in the socket where you previously got 18.3dB
Its not good that your internal wiring is showing such a difference :(

Yes, going out today to get some proper cat5e to do a proper extension and get rid of this terrible internal wiring and get to my proper attenuation and work from there. Need to sort that out first. I will post some stats once i have got rid of that.

Well after many hours of swearing and fighting with pulling cable through an existing hole to outside this is the results.

I still need to do the backbox/repair the brickwork outside but happy with the results. I dont think i will see the 24snr i used to get but i can deal with that.

All i can wonder is what cable did the developers use!!!!

Much improvement:

Connection Speed   39994 kbps   9999 kbps
Line Attenuation   16.7 dB   0.0 dB
Noise Margin   18.8 dB   22.22 dB

I also noticed no G.INP on my line on a Huawei cab. I read a few posts that although it was completed on those cab's it looks like they suspended it on new lines.

Guess this fits my line.

I would like to know what chipset the sky hub sr102 has...any ideas and is the above true on new lines?

cheers

Cheers Kitz.

I must assume its right then with the new lines and no G.INP. I notice no details about additional bearer on my line. I will monitor for a while.

On a good note since doing the work my SNR only fluctuates by a few .0 db so the cabling certainly improved everything.

Yes we've seen no g.inp now on several lines that have been activated since the end of March.

Glad things are much better now youve sorted the internal wiring :)
