Title: Norwich Catherdral Spire Falcons -- 2015
Post by: burakkucat on February 24, 2015, 05:04:33 PM
New this season is a camera with a wide angle view, suitable for all devices. (So the web site states.)

Unfortunately the orientation of its current mounting seems to allow rain drops to remain within the field of view. At a quick glance it is possible to miss seeing the falcon due to the distorted view . . .

Perhaps we could ask for the camera to be swiveled a few degrees clockwise?  ;)

Today, Mrs Norwich Falcon was observed performing some housekeeping duties (just like her cousin at Nottingham, earlier this week) which entailed bug removal and the creation of a saucer-shaped depression in the gravel.

Thanks b*cat - Ive added the link to your first post.

Today's the first chance Ive had to check in and view them, so thank you for posting some of the screen caps.   There's not much happening right now other than an empty nest.. and it looks and sounds awfully windy in Norwich right now.

Unlike the cousins at Nottingham, there is/are currently no egg(s) laid or imminent . . .

I've finally seen one of the falcons burakkucat - I've been looking everyday since you posted and haven't managed to see one but today I was lucky.

and so there is :)

That must have been laid today, because I checked late last night and it was a totally empty scrape and no sign of either parent.

Just watched Mr & Mrs NorwichP do a change over shift.

The new parent in charge was awfully noisy about it and took a long time inspecting and even turning over one of the eggs before settling.
He's still making a lot of noise now, wonder what he's so unsettled about.

Could it be that one of the eggs is emitting vibrations, as hatching is possibly imminent?  :-\

Earlier today I saw three hungry hatchlings being fed some freshly caught pigeon and one egg that will probably, now, not hatch.

Ive not visited for a few days so wonder when they started hatching.
It looks like you may have possibly been correct about one of the eggs emitting vibrations and imminent hatching.

I cant seem to find any dates of the hatchings except someone saying at this morning (https://twitter.com/MikeHoit/status/592982807099629568) (10:22) there were 2 chicks, so no 3 must have been sometime after that.  Therefore  possibly still hope for no 4  :fingers:

Having dismantled a pigeon (leaving the feathers to blow in the wind) the young huddle together for a nap whilst the parent watches over them --

Post by: kitz on May 23, 2015, 08:51:42 PM
Thanks b*cat, just checked them out.  Still all huddled in a corner, with some bloody remains and bones left in the centre of the scrape.   Looks like the parents are feeding them well as they are growing so fast.   Not as progressed as Nottingham yet whose adult feathers are coming through already.

They can "tuck in" to the two recesses either side of the central stonework and, thus, not be visible to the camera.  :)

Here's a night-time view --

A snapshot of the cathedral tower, with the viewing station in the foreground.  If you click the thumbnail and go to the full sized image you can just about see the nesting platform on the right one of the two smaller windows towards the top of the tower.

There certainly were 4 and I just sat watching the cams for several mins and I could only see three, but they were huddling a bit so difficult to count from the camera angle.

So I checked their blog and it appears that the smallest one died at the beginning of May - ]linky (http://upp.hawkandowl.org/youngest-of-norwich-peregrine-chicks-dies/).  :(

Earlier this afternoon there was a lot of screaming for food, followed by flapping of wings and jumping up & down. One of the young hopped onto the edge, flapped her/his wings and looked over the side . . . It seemed as if take-off was about to occur. After thinking about it, s/he turned around and faced the safety of the nest-site.
