Blackbird Rescue
« on: August 15, 2011, 03:04:40 PM »

Sue just heard a bird squawking, rushed to the rear bedroom window and next doors cat had got a young blackbird on the next doors lawn  :o

Its mother was flying round going crazy. The cat was just laid there and the bird looked lifeless at the side. :'(....But then it moved. As it moved the cat was just pawing it  >:(

So as Sue raced round I kept shouting to distract the cat, when she got there the cat ran off(without the bird). She picked it up and it was ok,it was breathing fast and shaking, but there was no damage to its wings etc.
She comforted a few minutes and then put it down and it managed to fly into nearby bushes/trees.Its up to nature now. :fingers:

Oh Uncy, how awful to see, I know from experience what it's like to witness that.  How wonderful you were able to distract the cat and for quick footed Sue to rush to the rescue.  I do hope the little one survives, at least you have done your best so it's well done to you both, thank you for that, it distresses me to know what goes on even if it's nature (cats and birds..and I've been a cat owner too)....I still can't bear to think of it.  Glad the story had a happy ending, warmed the cockles of me heart lol.  :)

Thing is if Sue had kept it she would only need another twenty three for a pie.

Lets hope all goes ok for baby blackbird.

I really like blackbirds.  They seem to find a spot and become frequent visitors.  I was upset when one of my cats got one of their babies a few years ago.  Ive named the pair that nest in the bushes at the bottom of my garden Billy and Betty lol
Touch wood Zac and Ziggy are mostly indoor cats and havent brought me any pressies :fingers:

I often watch a couple of blackbirds in my garden, the ones that eat the grass seeds that I put down for growing.
The mail has been around for a few years now. I know it's the same one because he has a feather that hangs down from one of his wings. I don't know about the female. I have a nesting box in a tree but they never entertain it, they prfer to nest in the tree. I have never seen any young ones. Maybe I haven't been watching at the right time. I do have a family of magpies in the area, although they have dwindled a bit. Of course there is the crows and such that I believe are partial to smaller birds eggs.
I must get round to repairing the nesting box one of these days. But as far as I know it has never been occupied in the five years it has been there.
