O2 Broadband issue
« on: October 05, 2010, 10:49:09 AM »

Hi Guys,

I decided to go for a cheaper broadband connection with O2, moving away from Virgin as they are very expensive.

My Virgin Media connection is still live untill the 15th October.

I had a new line installed by O2 last Friday and the Internet came live on the Saturday. The connection is upto 20Meg and has synced up at 14Meg accoring to my O2 wireless box iii and is stable as far as i can tell.

The first issue i had was with the "n" wireless dropping from 130mb down to 1mb, since then i have changed it to standarg "g" 54mbps which appears to clear up that issue.  The main issue i get is high latency during online games which hits between 300-500ms including many lag spikes, i have tested direct to the routers by using a LAN cable to no avail.

At the same time of testing a re-connected my virgin media connection and got a steady 53-79ms of gaming with only 1 small lag spike.

Later on that night around 12:30AM i re tested the O2 connection and hit 63ms!!!

Tested again this Morning at 8:30AM and i got 110-180ms on the O2 connection.

So whats going on?

Any help from you tech guys would be great.

Thanks Chris

I'm thinking by asking my ISP to turn off interleaving this may help.

Thoughts?

Please be patient in awaiting a reply,I'm sure someone will be along to try and answer your query.

Are you on O2 LLU or their Access package.

Have you tried phoning O2 support about your problem. You will find them very helpful(and UK based)  :)

Edit,I see from your other thread you are on  O2 Access

I can't really add anything to what UncleUB said. Latency isn't something you have much control over, so you need the assistance of the ISP. If you only used wireless then I would say that this was probably the cause of the problem, but if you've tried a direct ethernet connection and still found the same problem, then it's not a wireless problem.

Turning off interleaving may help a bit, but interleaving normally only adds about 25 ms to the latency.

If it was me I would stay with Virgin.

Unless you can get the O2 LLU service.

Oh and check out what unlimited really means as it may not be what you think it is.

Ok thx for the replies guys.

I called them and will be doing some testing with them over the phone later.

By the way, what is the differance between LLU and Access?

They have said if i'm not happy i can cancel the whole thing at no charge to me.

I would like to give them a chance as this service will be saving me £12 a month on my already tight budget.

Thanks again

LLU is where the isp has its own equipment installed in the exchange and O2@s Access package is for exchanges that aren't O2 enabled..LLU doesn't using IP profiles, but O2's Access package uses BT's profiling system

O2's Access package gets very bad press, its like chalk and cheese with their LLU package(which is excellent)

Might be an idea to have a look on the O2 forums

I would have said go to Samknows and check what is available on your post code but it looks like the site is in a real mess at the moment and not everything was working.

The OP can't be on O2 Access as he reported a synch speed of 14meg.

The maximum Access can achieve is 8Meg.

i think he will be on LLU as o2 access cost me £17.50pm when i was with them. remembering when i first joined o2 a couple of years ago the LLU was only £8pm i think, but my exchange wasnt LLU enabled.

at first o2 were spot on for me but after 7 months of faultless service it all went pear shaped and for the final 5 months i always had high latency during peak hours which eventually prompted me to leave for fast.
