A question on router resets
« on: September 14, 2010, 05:33:06 PM »

This is for my education as much as anything else.

My ISP recently supplied a Speedtouch 585 v7. It is connected solely by Ethernet to my computer. I had had but one reset in a couple of months, then recently the router summary shows an increase in the frequency
Code: [Select]
Uptime (days hh:mm:ss)       :  1 day, 1:37:07

Number of resets             :  3

What are the usual causes, sources of resets? I have a feeling that they might not , at the level given, be significant, yet it would be good to have assurance.

Hi Renluop,

There are many causes of resets or re-synchronisations including noise spikes on the line, an engineer breaking or disturbing your line connection when working on another pair, equipment maintenance or restarts in the exchange etc. It's quite impossible to say precisely what the problem was unless you observe a burst of noise perhaps when running Routerstats. A few resets a day are unlikely to be any cause for alarm or despondency !

On the other hand if you see an abnormal pattern then it does require watching. If you look on the link below for the disturbance I called a "Bad Hair Day" (joke) you'll see there were a significant number of anomalies, but the line has quietened down to an average of 2 per day again. Click on the picture to see all of it.

Kind regards,
