D-Link DSL-2740B - Which Firmware ??
« on: June 17, 2010, 10:50:35 PM »

Helpful peeps,

after running 2640Bs quite happily for 3 years, I finally got a 2740B to have a play with  ;D

The one I've picked up is running firmware v2.63 (or is it 2.61, only looked briefly), but question is, is this the best version of fw to run on it ?? I've looked on the D-Link support pages and it only lists up to v2.5.summat....and I'm sure I've read somewhere that there is a v2.93 available somewhere ???

Can anyone please help with this at all ????

There's a whole lot of more recent firmware on the Polish D-Link site: ftp://ftp.dlink.pl/dsl/dsl-2740b/driver_software/

(For some reason, the forum software insists on adding http:// to the front of that, so you need to copy it without the unwanted prefix, starting from the first 'ftp')

When I was using a 2740B I found that the 3-01 firmware from that site worked well, but the 5-** wasn't accepted by the upgrade utility. I see there's now a 3-03 version, which at a guess would be the latest for the UK.

Does the BCM6358 in the 2740B get a higher sync than the 6348 in the 2640B? I've got a 2640B and was wondering if the 2740B had any advantages apart from the wireless N.

There's no simple answer to that question. The differences in performance are fairly subtle. In my own case, I've tried routers with both chipsets, and found the 6358 to be slightly less stable than the 6348. But Be customers are recommended to use 6358-based routers because these are the most compatible with their equipment. I don't think that the differences are enough to be worth buying a new router.

I have a 2740B with firmware 2.73 and it works well. In fact over the past few weeks something has changed (not on my end) and I now have a reliable 8125kbps connect on a 41db attenuation line. Seems rock solid so far....

On initial connection on my line, it certainly looks like that's possible - 4800k @ 12dB for the 2740, 4300-ish k @12dB for my 2640....so I'm hopeful that I may squeeze an extra bit out of the line before it gets too unstable.

Having said that, when I re-connected my 2640 last night (8:30p.m.-ish), I tweaked and got 5632k down/832k up .......not bad on a 48dB line for a late-in-the-day sync.....AND it's been stable through the night. My best ever stable sync  ;D

Eric - thanks for that, will check it out tonight. I assume the fw is still in english, even though it's on the polish site ??

Try going to ftp.dlink.pl/dsl and then click down through dsl-2740b and driver_software. I'm sorry that ftp links seem to be so difficult to post - it's something which rings bells in my mind and I'll be looking at it.

To answer your earlier question about language, yes, the firmware is in English.

I seem to think it is a general problem with a lot of forums if you let the forum code find urls. I have for a long time now manually coded the [ url ] [ / url ] which then works fine (without all the spaces of course). That also allows you to create text links if you do
Code: [Select]
Google
