DG834GU router
« on: February 03, 2010, 01:24:11 AM »

I am using a DG834GU v5. It has a USB port on the back, the rest looks the same as the DG834G v5.

When I go to Router Upgrade in my modem/router settings it will not let me upgrade using the Netgear DG834Gv5 firmware.

I was wondering if anyone knows what would happen if I TFTP upload the Netgear firmware (DG834Gv5-V1.6.01.34.chk) to it as it powers on?

Good morning, Panic, and welcome to the forum.

I have split your question from the thread in which you posted as this is a slightly different topic.

I'm afraid that I've never heard of this model, and it doesn't seem to have been marketed in the UK. There are discussions about it in the whirlpool.au forum, but I couldn't locate any firmware for it. I suspect that if you try to force it to take the DG834Gv5 firmware you may well end up bricking it.

Well if I try it and it does brick my modem can't I recover it with the "DG834 Recovery Utility" ?
Would I need the original firmware for my modem beforehand for the DG834 Recovery Utility to use?
My ISP's site was hosting it but the link has been dead for ~2 months now and Netgear don't appear to have it except on their Open Source Code for Programmers page but I'm not a programmer :'(

The recovery utility might work but I don't think there's any guarantee. I've never used it myself, but I think you would have to have a valid firmware file for it to upload to the router. Sorry, I'm not a lot of help, but I really don't know the answer.

The Netgear DG834GU v5 is a modem built for OPTUS by Netgear this is why you will not find it on the netgear site.
The firmware is not 100% standard. as you will notice the IP address of the modem is 10.1.1.1
Their is a updated firmware on the Optus site. http://members.optuszoo.com.au/support/

Under Netgear DG834GSP V5
Click on 'Modem Version 5 Firmware'

Version is 6.00.28

It is not even the right ext for a 834GT or any other normal router.

I would leave well alone unless you don't mind having a router for a door stop.
