adsl 2+ - same speed
« on: July 01, 2009, 03:47:38 PM »

Hi,

I just found this excellent website. I've had a good look round and can't see any pointers - so sorry if the answer is here somewhere.

I just got upgraded to adsl2+ with Demon. Before the upgrade, my figures were

SNR 11.1   6
Power  12.8  18.5
Atten   30.5   16.5
Rate    8072   1011

Unfortunately I didn't bother working out how to get the full details before the upgrade, so that's all I have. Speed checkers used to give me about 6800.

After the upgrade, I'm getting roughly the same. The Demon speed predictor gives me 6000 with my previous adsl, and 12146 with adsl 2+. The calculator on this site gives me theoretical 15264.

So, this below is what I'm actually getting. I've tried reconnecting plenty of times, but it varies by no more than 300. Switching everything off near my filter gave me an extra 0.3dB SNR. My modem is a Belkin N1 ADSL2+.

Does anyone have any ideas what to look for?

many thanks in advance
Dave

Hiya Dave,

I'm no expert on this stuff, but I joined the ADSL2+ trial that PlusNet are running at the beginning of May. It took a couple of days for the revised IP profile to be updated. That MAY be your issue.

I'm sure the techies will be along soon to add more to this topic.

Thanks - I have vaguely heard of that, and that could well be the explanation. I can't think why Demon wouldn't put it in their FAQ. Too technical? ;-)

Yes, I think that may well be a possibility.

Have you tried the BT Performance Tester - details on this site under ADSL. That will tell you the current profile as far as BT are concerned.
BT are then supposed to advise your ISP, and there can sometimes be a bit of a delay.

I don't know if you can find that information within Demon, but as I said before others will be along soon.

Good luck

Hmm, it wouldn't be too hard to mention a 24-48 hour delay for filtering through ;-)

I tried the BT Performance tester but it's been busy for hours.

thanks

It's not an IP profile problem. The connection speed is much the same as it was, so that's what limits the IP profile and therefore actual download speeds.

What I'm not clear about is what system you were on before you were upgraded. Your earlier connection speeds show that it wasn't ADSL Max, so perhaps you were already on ADSL2+ and nothing has changed.

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I was on whatever Demon's 8MB product. I can't imagine it was ADSL+ - I think I've been getting speeds of around 6Mbs (with the modem saying around 8Mbs) since I was upgraded from 2Mbs.

The upgrade happened on 30th July - I was notified by letter beforehand and email that evening.

Whatever I was on, Demon suggested beforehand on their predictor page that I would get 6Mbs with their current product, and 12Mbs afterwards. The 6Mbs was correct, but that hasn't changed at all since the upgrade

cheers

Yes Eric, you're correct. I hadn't noticed the previously obtained Upload speed of 1011kbps.

If Dave1892 had been on ADSL 2(Max ?) the upload would have been restricted to 448, wouldn't it ?

Under ADSL2+, I've had upload connection speeds ranging from 440, 888, and as high as 1208, and download speeds of between 11939 up to 12948, but I'm only on 8302 at the moment due to a fault. I'm currently waiting for a BT visit when they get their act together.

As far as I can see, Demon's 8 Mbps package is Home 8000, which is ADSL max. This would have given you an upstream connection speed of 448 kbps, whereas you were getting 1011 kbps. I still favour the view that you were on ADSL2+ before and nothing has changed. It might have been a throttled version which limited your downstream speed to 8 Mbps, in which case the supposed upgrade hasn't taken place.

[Edit] Toulouse got there first, but I've posted my comment anyway.

Thanks - there is a reasonable chance I copied that upload speed down wrong. I just noticed that a speed test I did the day before gave me 6.72 and 0.12, so maybe the 1011 is wrong.

Going from Max to ADSL 2+ you can usually expect to see a slight increase in your attenuation figure, however your before and after attenuations are identical, and the other stats also look very similar.

Yes, true, although on the other hand my SNR was as far as I can remember always above 11, but since the 30th, never goes above 9.8

a 1db change in SNR can be anything such a change in the weather .

Agreed - The previous upstream of 1011 just isnt possible on Max. It would be 448 or 832 if you paid for Premium.

The downstream is lower than I'd anticipate for a 31dB attenuation line.   There could be 2 reasons for this

1) Demon is still restricting it to an 8Mb profile.
2) Your line is poor - have you tried testing directly from the test socket behind the master socket to see if that improves anything?

Well, I am thinking I may have got the before upstream figure wrong. It was just written on some paper, with lots of other stuff on it.

I tried the test socket, but I don't have access to it. Behind the main plate, the wire goes further through the back plate of a metal box.

I'm in touch with Demon to see what they say.

thanks for your answers.
