AVG 8.5 free
« on: March 20, 2009, 04:13:52 PM »

Has anyone tried this and if so what do you think of it? I have been using AVG 8 for some time now but in the last few days it has started to not complete a scan after about ten minutes with the usual "Tell Microsoft" window. I can't think of anything that might have provoked this apart from adding a new empty hard drive. AVG are reminding me to try 8.5 and on another forum there was the suggestion to download 8.5 and use the repair option so that is what I am trying. Otherwise it might be time to try Avast. Shame really I've been quite satisfied with AVG over the years but it seems to be getting a bit bloated and glitchy. The 8.5 download is 59 Megs!

Over at the 'other place' there are many gripes from disgruntled AVG users.

Try Avast instead:

If you wish to uninstall AVG 8.5, after uninstall is is recommended that you go to http://www.avg.com/download-tools and download and run the AVG Remover toll to get rid of all traces, orphan files, registry keys etc.

Avast should then install ok. Avast is great... :)

Thanks for those pointers TD and Floydoid. Just to say I have installed AVG 8.5, updated and done a scan and so far OK. The scan seems marginally faster than AVG 8 which must be good news. I'll see how it goes and post a progress report in a week or so.

I started using Avast AV a long time ago, but somewhere along the line transferred over to AVG, free and paid for versions.
But as with many other dissatisfied disgruntled AVG users I finally come back to using Avast, "just wish I had done it a long time ago".

Only 2 problems with Avast that I can think of.
1. Not being able to tell Avast "not to recognise files" as Trojans/Virus that I know are not Trojans/Virus files. (Don't warn me in the future when this file is detected)
2. With large files it takes a long time to scan/start when starting a single manual file scan.

Thanks for those comments OF. As I said earlier I'll see how it goes and post again in a week or so. If of course it all goes pear shaped it may be quicker than that!

Not an important point, but nice etiquette... :)
