Emoticons
« on: January 16, 2009, 12:46:43 AM »

Hello Kitz.....

I am wondering how to put a smilie into a post.I read your advice on computeractive site and can do the basic ones
but i am wondering how i can put on say this one :no: . Your site has something in place so its simple to click on what you want.
I can manage to put in a picture and can hide a link behind a word like "click here",so i just need now to master how
to put up something moving etc.

It looks as though you already know all you need to know on the subject. :)  If the picture which you include is an animated GIF then it will be animated in the forum.

To get the shaking head smiley you type
Code: [Select]
:no:
which comes out like this: :no:

The standard SMF forum smileys are here but Kitz has added several others. There isn't a reference to the extra ones, but if you click on them when posting a message you can see what characters are added to your text.

The other forum uses jsp and allows html characters, whilst this forum software uses php therefore allows something called bbcode which allows the forum owner to designate certain character sets to a smiley.

I dont think theres a full list anywhere, since the forum owner can assign what they like and then make them clickable.

I'll attach a screen grab of the smilies Ive assigned to what codes below.

Hello kitz and roseway,thanks for helping,but are you saying that computeractive forum cannot display animated smilies.
I can insert the basic smilies and video gifs,but not animated ones.

ahh... think I get what youre meaning now robin. :)
Sorry thought you were talking about inserting them on this site.. didnt realise you meant on CA.

CA only has those smilies that I listed that you can use on there.  I went searching through their files to see what was available and why I put the list up in the first place since before that the info wasnt there.  No they dont have any animated smilies. :/

However if you want to insert one of your own emoticons into the CA forums you can do so by wrapping the url location of the image with html <img> tags

eg if the smiley you wanted to show was at www.site.co.uk/image_name.gif then you'd type.

Code: [Select]

<img src="http://www.site.co.uk/image_name.gif"/>

Theres a pile of smilies you can use at http://www.emotionless.co.uk/emotes/  So if say you wanted to insert this smiley

Then first get the url code which is http://www.emotionless.co.uk/emotes/a/lol.gif

and type it into the CA forums as

Code: [Select]

<img src="http://www.emotionless.co.uk/emotes/a/lol.gif"/>

Hope this info helps.

nps robin.

I think you will find that several people already gripe about the CA forum software and how it can make things more complicated to do than some other types of forum software.
Its down to the fact that VNUnet chose the software that they did, which makes it a bit different than most other types - and it has some comparitively odd quirks.

If Im honest - its not all down to the software they use - but VNUnets implication of some of it :(
