Virgin Media broadband speeds up

Virgin Media has launched its new 50 Megabits per second (Mbps) domestic broadband service.

It doing so it will be the first UK ISP to roll out a next generation broadband service that runs far faster than most others available to UK web users.

The new 50 Mbps service will cost £51 a month, although this is reduced to £35 if users also take a Virgin Phone line for an additional £11 a month.

The service will put Virgin at the top of the speed league for UK ISPs.

Close behind is Be Broadband which offers at 24Mbps service for £17.50 per month.

I was reading about this on the BBC site earlier, although no prices were mentioned, are people really going to pay that price, you could buy a lot of DVDs a month for the same money. I was amused to see Warrington had a high Virgin customer count. I fear it smacks of the haves and have nots again, fine if you live in a large conurbation otherwise forget it.

The spell checker just made me laugh, it wanted to replace nots with nits.

Even in today's strained economic climate there are still those who "must have it first".

Although they probably don't need it, they do need the image and the buzz of having something new before most other people. This is particularly prevalent in the electronic goods market.

Its a case of those who can get fast speeds will be able to get even faster and those on long lines with no cable in their area are getting left even further behind.

I don't think any remote area in Wales has Cable available.

My street actually has Fibre Optic below, owned by the council, waiting to be "plugged in" so to speak.

Cardiff and Swansea have fibre and all the Banks in Bridgend have 100meg fibre connections as I am told...

It would be nice to have cable but the cost is quite a bit too high for me I am afraid...

Be Broadband, the ISP owned by O2's parent company, Telefonica, have announced today the successful completion of their bonded broadband trial which ran on the London Paddington exchange. The trial was mainly aimed at understanding the technical capabilities involved using ADSL2+ over two telephone lines which were bonded together to make one line. Customers reported real-world speeds of between 30Mbps and 45Mbps- just 5Mbps shy of Virgin's headline 50meg speed. Be will be carrying out further trials through 2009.

Sounds promising, but I dread to think how much it will cost.

AFAIK the major cost is the installation of an additional phone line.
