Mobile phone batteries
« on: November 25, 2008, 07:44:54 AM »

Don't know if anyone ever buys these, but if you do, is there anywhere online that's reasonably priced that you have bought from and can recommend please?  I like my "old" Motorola V220 but it needs charging quite often now so wondered if I replaced the battery I might still be able to use it.  Would be interested to hear, thank you.

www.batteryupgrade.com

They ship from Hong Kong and arrive usually within 3 days.  The batteries are the Real McCoy and not cheap imitations - I use to be in the phone battery business and know the source Sino-Cameron as a good quality maker.

With many of the cheap grey imports there is a high risk of serious injury - remember the "flaming" laptops?  The cheapie guys leave out the battery protection circuit which is there to prevent over-charging and/or rapid discharging - leading to flames that, on a mobile phone battery, can be up to 2 feet long and vicious on the skin.  I have a piece of video that I shot whilst in Japan doing testing on such batteries and a well-known brand even failed spectacularly (think Bravia and you have their TVs).  I would strongly advise care when buying the "unknowns".

..... with prices between £9.95 and £29.99 for the battery.  When you take into account that the safety circuitry (at cost) is about £4 then ask yourself .... what price safety?  I admit that £29.99 is a tad steep, but typical of original manufacturer pricing.

I think people should take camallison's advice seriously. I know I wouldn't want to take the risk of my mobile bursting into flames, even if it's only a rare occurrence.

I got a battery for my old Motorola mobile in September 2006 from an EBay supplier called ActionAce007 in Hongkong. It was cheap at 99p with 2.99 carriage and it arrived fairly quickly. It is still going strong although my mobile use is very light. Camallison's advice is totally valid and I've no idea of the source of the battery but my experience has been good. No idea if he will have one for your phone, Chrissie, but you can have a search. He is still trading on EBay which must be a sort of reassurance that his products are acceptable but no guarantees of course!

Eric,
If it did, you could always try calling the 'hot line'.

In my case it would be hot trousers, and that doesn't appeal to me at all :)

Just had a thought. I think all the recent "bursting into flames" incidents have been with Lithium batteries and usually in laptops, whilst they are being charged. My Motorola phone used old technology NiMh batteries which are much less likely to give problems. Not to underestimate the risk with Lithium cells but if Chrissie's phone is fairly old it might also not be Lithium. Also the problem only happens whilst charging which, whilst dangerous to property, probably means your trousers are safe, Eric, unless you charge your phone in your pocket!

Thanks for your help everyone, think I will get from reputable place now and hope for the best..... funny thing tho, since I posted this, the phone which is "only" 4 years old has started playing up.... graphics on screen are splitting.... :( so not sure if that's cos of the battery, the phone itself or the sim card.  You can tell I know everything about techno stuff can't you..... NOT!!
