Try using the Alkmaar (Netherlands) server on speedtest.net. Recently, I've found the 2 UK servers to be very erratic in ping and speed results.

Hi
some examples of better speeds after reconnecting to Tiscali

TEST_DATE        IP address    DOWNLOAD_SPEED UPLOAD_SPEED   server
23/10/08 15:45 xxxxxxxxxxx     475 kb/s       358 kb/s                    Maidenhead
23/10/08 15:47 YYYYYYYYYYY    3465 kb/s       377 kb/s                    M

29/10/08 15:39 xxxxxxxxxxx   1603 kb/s        365 kb/s                   Dublin  Note even different server can improve REPORTED speed
29/10/08 16:15 YYYYYYYYYYY   4661 kb/s        377 kb/s                    M

03/11/08 18:52 xxxxxxxxxxx    476 kb/s        369 kb/s                     M

Tiscali's own speedtest was coming back with 22k! I called them, the bloke on the phone was genuinely shocked! "22k? That's slower than the slowest dialup!" He made me switch it on and off again ;) and unplug everything... Nothing made any difference, it was getting worse and worse, if you can believe it. Well now it's up to 1.9m.Think this erratic connection speed is Tiscali or me?

The tiscali speedtester is wildly inaccurate.  In fact one of the most inaccurate Ive ever used.
It can give me anything from very poor speeds up to 155Mbps (which is impossible).

The test file they use in the test is way to small to be accurate on anything much more than dial up.
Stick to somewhere like thinkbroadband or speedtest.net

I had 1050meg!!! Although that would be nice, i don't think so!

I found that it works fine on a USB modem, but using Ethernet, it seems to measure the speed of the ethernet adapter in the computer (in my case Gigabit Ethernet).  :hmm:

Jid... that's weird... although the checker is not capable of knowing the difference between a USB and Ethernet connection, it just seems to get muddled up on anything faster than Tiscali's 512k connections which it was used for. The file it downloads is stupidly small for todays connections, therefore it's worse than useless at doing the job it's meant to!

PS

I lied about the 155Mbps - it was actually 256Mbps -  I still have the screen cap
