Having just read a story by Terry Pratchett featuring intelligent rats, maybe the mice got together and carted the trap off somewhere.

wasn't that a Dean Koontz short story?

I remember the +++ Out of Cheese Error +++ from one of the Discworld series, cant remember which one it was now though, since I read a hell of a lot of them many years ago.

Dunno if Dean Koontz did a story about rats too - read many of his books over the years.

And also all the James Herberts Rats series - Rats, Lair and Domain

There's a short story by Dean Koontz, in a book of his which is a collection of short stories ('Strange Highways') where a collection of extra smart rats escape from a research facility. Good, but scary! haha

AHA.

"Trapped": about a woman and her son trying to fend off an attack by giant, mutated rats.

I think its the forum software that is ignoring the last bracket in the link if its just pasted in.
Try this wiki link - Link.

You need to add the closing bracket for it to work.

Deane Koontz - the intelligent animals in his story were monkeys.

No, that's 'Fear Nothing' where he wrote about the super intelligent monkies.
'Trapped' is a short story from his book 'Strange Highways' about super intelligent rats. See above links.
