Help choosing a 5G router (ZTE MC7010)
« on: March 31, 2025, 01:53:34 PM »

When I last looked at 5G modems a few years ago, there were hardly any models available - I think just a very expensive Huawei.

I'm now in the market for a modem to use with a 1pmobile unlimited sim (EE network) as a backup to my soon-to-be-installed FTTP line and am a bit overwhelmed with the choice now available.

Anyone have any recommendations?  I'm in a relatively good 5G area - my iphone SE (3rd Gen) speedtests at around 300Mbits/s download and 25Mbits/s upload, also with a 1pmobile SIM.

My main priority is speed of the 5G connection (especially upload) - I'll be hard-wiring it with Ethernet, so will not use its wifi.

Thanks,.

For indoor use I've had great results from the GL.iNet GL-X3000.

The MC7010 arrived around 5.45pm (well done Amazon), but unfortunately it seems to be faulty.  Firstly, it wouldn't accept POE from my own POE adapter.  I then tried the supplied POE injector, and it powered on, but wouldn't make a LAN connection (the physical link wouldn't come up).

After a little playing about, the link did come up, but only at 100Mbps (not 1G), and it would then sometimes lose the link.

So it's going back to Amazon.  I do like the form-factor though, so will be trying again, this time via ebay, to see if I can get one that works.

Why do you need a back-up for FTTP? FTTP is rock solid and since having had it installed over a year ago, I've not had a single day when it didn't work.

You're right that I probably don't need it, but I don't like the idea of only having a single internet connection - not only physical problems can happen, but also network/routing issues where having a second connection can be useful.

I did restrain myself to only getting 330/50 FTTP, even though gigabit is available.  My current pair of bonded VDSL lines with AAISP give me around 140/30 and I don't find that limiting, even with a family of heavy video streamers.  The money we're saving by switching from 2xVDSL to 1xFTTP is more than the cost for the backup connection.

FTTP is not infallible. With altnets digging up the roads, one day, you might have a problem. Your ISP could suffer an outage which is nothing to do with the fibre infrastructure.

I have a backup because I work from home, my backup is a second FTTP connection from a completely different network, and I can always fall back on 5G if I am really stuck. I've even got a paused Starlink unit if I'm really, really stuck :)

The other modem on my shortlist is the Zyxel NR5103E, which I understand is sold by EE and Three (with the EE firmware being much more locked-down than Three's, which is much closer to stock).

There's two versions of the NR5103e, both have different wifi and different radios.
I have a MC7010, powered by PoE, mounted indoors does around 300 down and 50 up in my second floor apartment on Three Business Broadband.

My replacement MC7010 arrived last weekend and I've been testing it this week.

It's a Three-branded version and arrived with the B09 firmware (and a 2022 copyright date).  It immediately upgraded itself to B02 (and a 2024 copyright date) when I inserted a 1pmobile (EE) SIM.

Firstly, the good points - it's working with my standard POE injector, and the basic functionality seems stable - I am using it with an L2TP connection to AAISP, and the connection hasn't dropped since I was last playing with it a few days ago.  Current uptime for the connection is 76 hours.

I'm using it in bridge mode, which seems to be behaving oddly.  It has an internal (management) IP of 192.168.254.1 and no way to put this on a different VLAN to the WLAN interface (there is only one physical port).  If I configure a subnet in my Firebrick with the address 192.168.254.2 and gateway 192.168.254.1 then I can access the internet through that interface - so the device must be doing NAT to the WLAN IP address (which it shows in the webui).

I can also get the WLAN IP on my firebrick via a DHCP request on a second subnet on the same interface, which is working as well.  Although things don't reset properly if I disconnect & reconnect the 5G in the modem - so I've disabled that and have just gone with the 192.168.254.1 address as gateway, as this seems more reliable.

The webui seems very flaky, often freezing and logging me out.

Upload speed seem good, and matches my iphone - around 25-40Mbps during the day, and peaking at around 70-80Mbps in the small hours of the morning.

However, download speeds are disappointing - averaging around 40-50Mbps.  My phone gets up to about 450Mbps during the day on the same network.

It's currently installed in my loft, and gets around -75 to -85 dBm.  I will probably move it outside at some point, but I'm guessing the speed issue is more likely related to the modem's capabilities than its location?

Just a small update.  I decided to move it outdoors, and this made minimal difference to the signal strength and quality.   Looking at cellmapper, it seems that the only tower the modem will lock onto is one obscured by a 30 storey tower block directly in the line of sight.

The pole mount (a metal strap) is also completely useless on small poles (mine is about 1" diameter).  It's currently just held on with some cable ties, but I'll need to find something better.

The signal strength seems to constantly fluctuate between about -69 dBm and -80 dBm - I haven't managed to find an orientation that's stable at the higher strength.

Locking the modem to band 7 seems to give a noticable boost in download speeds - I'm now getting around 80Mbps download during the day, and around 50-60Mbps upload.

I'm still a bit disappointed I didn't manage to match the download speeds of my phone (which are in the 200-400Mbps range) but it's still more than adequate for my usage.

It's an iphone SE (3rd gen).
https://cacombos.com/device/A2783 < iPhone SE 3rd Gen has a Snapdragon X60 crippled and called a X57
https://theapplewiki.com/wiki/SDX57M

https://cacombos.com/device/MC7010 < has a Snapdragon X55 same as the iPhone 12 series https://theapplewiki.com/wiki/SDX55M

If you went to https://www.cellmapper.net/map what bands are your local masts capable of?
