Ofcom UK Rules to Stop Misleading Use of “Fibre” Broadband
« on: December 13, 2023, 08:52:08 PM »

The UK telecoms, media and internet content regulator, Ofcom, has today introduced new guidelines that will effectively only allow broadband ISPs to use terms like “fibre” and “full-fibre” on their websites, and in contracts, if their network brings fibre optic cables all the way to your home (i.e. FTTP / FTTH).

Better late than never, they should have done this a decade ago.

I'm sure its not at all going to cause further confusion when existing customers suddenly notice they are no longer on a fibre package.

Finally!  The inappropriate use of fibre isone of my bugbears going way back to 2007, and it escalated when FTTC was first introduced.  I wrote ~ The Fibre Optic Broadband Debate - Fibre Optic Broadband which isn't! about a decade or so ago.

It was sad that City Fibre's attempt to rectify the situation failed.  Both Ofcom and the ASA seemed to be on the side of VM, so it only followed that Openreach and others were also going to use the term.   This should have been stamped on a decade ago.   Better late than never because far too many people think they have FTTH "Full Fibre" when they dont.

I remember when my neighbour was on FTTC thought he was on full fibre. I think he thought it was slow so moved to VM.

I dont think the timing is by accident, they have waited until BT and co have enough FTTP coverage so it wouldnt affect them nationally.
