More Digital Voice :)
« on: May 03, 2023, 10:24:31 AM »

So... my dad has a new (Vodafone FTTC) isp and has also been put on DV. So far so good, but now he wants his old extra loud bell back in service he's a bit deaf.. probably from the aforementioned bell, something like this one GPO BT Vintage Bell Set No. 26/1 FWR57 .

One problem I foresee could be available power required for this beast.
Current setup, Vodafone router, DV adapter, Gigaset 850go x2 handsets, BT Decor 2200. Orphaned equipment BT wall mounted phone and Bell.

Any ideas?

Hello,

Bob's telephone pages will have some useful information I think.

see https://britishtelephones.com/btdigitalvoice.htm and https://www.britishtelephones.com/bellst26.htm

I think that if you can convert the bell to a BT line cord, then you might be able to drive it from a SIP ATA.
        - like a Cisco one, or a Grandstream HT802.

Kind regards,
    Tony

A bellset 26 in its original form has 1000 ohm impedance so will have REN=4, which is technically the maximum allowed on a single line. If that causes issues with the DV adapter then options to deal with it are:
1. Put a 3.3k resistor in series with its bell coils to reduce the REN to 1, but that will likely make it somewhat quieter.
2. Get hold of a 4k bell coil for it as were used in later phones and ringers.
3. Get something like a Bell 50E (https://www.britishtelephones.com/bell50e.htm) which sounds very similar and only has REN=1 as it has a 4k  bell coil in it.

I will get my dad to take a picture of this relic  ;) to find out what version it is.
Main reason he likes it.. you can hear this going off at the end of the garden ... some 250ft away! ;D

How many phone rings does it take him to walk the 250ft back to answer the phone?  :)

I agree with tubaman.

https://www.britishtelephones.com/bellst26.htm talks about adding the 3.3k resistor and where to connect it on a bell set 26 and how to connect it to a BT new plan line cord.

Cheers,
