On Sunday 23 April 2023 at 3pm, there will be a national test of the UK Emergency Alerts service.

Emergency Alerts is a UK government service that will warn you if there’s a danger to life nearby.
In an emergency, your mobile phone or tablet will receive an alert with advice about how to stay safe.

Disabled on my phone, rather not know if a nuclear missile is about to kill me.

I do wonder if this test is a bit risky for people with a heart condition.

Yep, there's going to be a lot of brown trouser moments for those that are unaware of what is happening.

All good. If the EMP from the high atmosphere burst isn't a warning the flash/noise/shockwave from the first salvo hitting military targets will let you know.

Nearly time for that test.

Both ours 1 min late. If it was the old 4 minute warning you’ve just lost 25% of your remaining time

Also received a min late (3:01).

Bit of a non-event really,  I'd completely forgotten that a test was due.
My phone was in the next room charging and I heard it beep a few times. It sounded a bit like the Tunstall monitor modem was about to dial out.   If I hadn't have been forewarned, I probably would have just thought that it was something on the TV.

btw some news reports are saying this is the first time that there has been this type of test, but Im sure we had one  many years ago.  Possibly more than 10 years or so.

According to The Guardian:
Quote
The national alert system has been more than a decade in the making. Initial tests began in 2013 with regional alerts, and a review published in 2014 strongly recommended moving forward with the programme.

Which suggests the previous test wasn't national.

Also:
Quote
The overwhelming majority of users who failed to receive the alert appeared to be with the Three network, but some on the O2 and Vodafone networks also reported difficulty. Users whose phones have not received a software update in more than two years, and those who were not within reach of a 4G or 5G network were not expected to successfully receive it.

So, not very useful then.
