ZyXEL VMG8924-B10A - Interface Groups question
« on: March 30, 2023, 08:08:07 PM »

Hi,

I have the ZyXEL VMG8924-B10A modem router, currently in router mode, but I plan to soon switch it to dumb modem mode with a standalone router which has only two NICs / ports. Where the phone line enters the house, I have an ethernet cable going off to the rest of the LAN, but I want another cable to terminate here to join up two separate segments of network (long story, previous home owner was a bit odd...).

I think that I can set up the Zyxel in such a way that LAN1 becomes the modem port for the router to do PPPoE, and LAN2-4 become a separate group, almost like a dumb switch (though I understand this will also allow me access to the admin interface of the Zyxel).

My question is - is an Interface Group enough, or do I need to worry about VLANs? I'm not super familiar with VLANs and don't really want to guddle with them unless I have to. From what i've read and understood so far, however, I think I don't need to worry about them - just set up a new IG with the WAN interface and LAN1, and a separate group with LAN2-4.

Any guidance appreciated!

I should add, the layout I plan is:

Phone line ---- Zyxel WAN/VDSL port

Zyxel LAN1 --- Router WAN port

Router LAN port --- Zyxel LAN2

Zyxel LAN3 & LAN4 to two discrete segments of network cabling in the house.

I realise I could just add a switch to the Router LAN port but I wanted to avoid another box / power supply in the cramped space involved. Plus I think this way the Zyxel's admin interface will still be accessible from the LAN.

Thanks!

From this, it looks like it should indeed be possible: https://kitz.co.uk/routers/zyxel_VMG8324-B10A_bridge.htm

I read your description once yesterday and then again today (twice). From my understanding of your current setup I believe that you can, indeed, configure things as you proposed in your second post.

Do, please, update this thread with the results once you have experimented with the configuration.
